I want to say, "I was born on May 27, 1991."

How do I say this? May I say, "Mi naskiĝis la 27-a de majo, 1991"? Or should it be "la 27-an de majo, 1991"? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

"Mi naskiĝis la 27an de Majo 1991" with adverbial accusative. The names of months should IMHO be writte upper case, as they are proper names. A comma is not used before the year.

Sometimes the Fundamento can help:

Zamenhof:Georgo Vaŝington estis naskita la dudek duan de Februaro de la jaro mil sepcent tridek dua.

I hope this helps

From the tekstaro:

From bertilow:

...ĉar mi naskiĝis la 3an de Oktobro...

Nobody has yet mentioned a preposition: je la 27a de Majo.

(Obviously you are "allowed" to say en or dum, and even sur is easily understood, but je is standard.)

OK, so it seems pretty clear that it should be la "27-an", not "la 27-a", and that the comma before 1991 should not be there. Here are a few more related questions:

1. What is the difference between "naskita" and "naskiĝis"?

2. What is the difference between "27an" and "27-an"? Is this simply a matter of style, or is there one that is proper? Vikipedio generally uses "27-an", but Zamenhof used "27an".

3. Are months capitalized? Or is this a matter of style? Relatedly, are there standardized capitalization rules in general, such as for book titles or historical events and eras? I have noticed that there are contradicting capitalization methods on Vikipedio, probably from people with different native languages with different capitalization methods.

Thanks!

1. Mi estis naskita and Mi naskiĝis are essentially the same.

2. Many people use hyphens because otherwise 1a (first) looks too much like la (the). You may also see a dot (la 15. Decembro) or superscript (je la 15ᵃ de Decembro).

3. Officially, months should be written with capital letters, but it is now common to write them without, like days of the week.

Thanks. When you say that months should officially be written with capital letters, is that based on the Fundamento? Are there standardized capitalization rules in general in Esperanto, like for book titles?

Yes, it follows the Fundamento, and the Academy recommends it, but there is room for disagreement, and my old dictionary gives the months with small letters. Generally you capitalize names of people and places, when they are nouns, and not much else.

There are no rules about book titles. Three conventions I've seen are: 1) capitalize exactly as in an ordinary sentence, 2) capitalize the beginning and all nouns, and 3) capitalize everything except prepositions and la, kaj, aŭ.

1) La granda kato kaj la malgranda hundo. 2) La granda Kato kaj la malgranda Hundo. 3. La Granda Kato kaj la Malgranda Hundo.
