"Every day, 30 people finish the tree on the web! Most of our learners, however, use the course on mobile and we don't have statistics for how many learned it on mobile. I think we can safely conclude that at least 60 people are completing the tree per day... most likely this number is closer to 100."

It would be cool if we could get more courses like this one. How about Livemocha?

Livemocha has some Esperanto courses; I used to help a couple people there who were learning it. But I'm not active there anymore, partly because the site is too intense and always bogged down my clunky old laptop and made it overheat (and didn't load at all on my phone), and partly because I got really tired of people "language-partner-ing" me and sending me a message, but then when I go to respond, it says "you are no longer connected as language partners" or something to that effect. That got old pretty fast!

The vital question is how many people from duolingo will go on to use and promote Esperanto.

Even lernu cannot get them stick to the Esperantujo.

Watch this guy, he already clearly indicated his future. Some comments he deleted, not a very open-minded person

Did you see the comments before he deleted them? Just because people deleted comments, does not mean they are not open-minded, unless you have read those comments. Sometimes people post spam comments ( "Earn $$$ working from home!" ), or comments that are mean and unhelpful for no good reason. For example, if someone posted an anti-semitic comment about Zamenhof, that is really not relevant to the content of this video.

As he said, Esperanto is not useful, and someone gave him the esperanto turism, esepranto commerce etc information, and said would follow his geography channel when he uses esperanto for the channel.

Would that be a spam ?

I posted a comment in one of the duolingo write up from USA about her mother involving in preparing the course. The data 2 million esperanto users keep surfing without renew, i gave the six points on that including the use of Esperanto in tourism with website, the admin also silenced it.

If the data is wrong, just admit it and welcome to share the new info.

The fellow's a jackass. Why did he bother making a video about it if it's not a useful language? He complains that there are not enough speakers, but the more people you dissuade from learning it, the fewer speakers there will be!

I believe all language courses see a high attrition rate. I don't think it necessarily indicates a problem with the course

A lot of people in this world spend a lot of time making a video or website explaining why they don't like a harmless hobby that others enjoy.

It's not worth giving such people our time or attention (or watching their videos in particular, thus raising their viewing numbers!) There will always be such people in the world.

He concedes that if you study languages l'art pour l'art, then it is a good idea to study Esperanto.
He concedes Esperanto propaedeutic value. (One of the biggest arguments of Esperanto's supporters).
He says that if you want to learn a language that you can use on the street, then studying Esperanto is a bad idea. Or with howmany persons have you spoken Esperanto on the streets in your personal experience?

What is wrong about that?
Why would you call him a jackass?

You can't get much more positive about Esperanto without lying.

As erinja said: Esperanto is a harmless hobby some enjoy.

It's a hobby for some, but others are interested in raising its profile to something more than a sideshow. This fellow, unwitting or no, is adding to the profile of Esperanto as being an amusing sideshow hobby with some minor benefits.

There are quite a few languages whose number of speakers is small or whose influence and value are limited. Would it be correct for me to tell people not to bother learning Dutch because of its limited influence and the high value and preponderance of English? Or perhaps to avoid Welsh?

Following this through logically the only languages worth learning are English, Spanish, German, French (though increasingly less), Chinese and Arabic. The rest are not worth it. Following it with complete rigidity one could just say: "Become excellent at English, because it is the language of the future. Other languages are for the enthusiast above all".
