Hi everyone

Just a heads-up that lernu! will be holding a conference this summer for its users, in conjunction with SES ("Slavic Esperanto Study", though that acronym might change this year to "Summer Esperanto Study"). It will be held in Slovakia. The conference will last a week and will include classes, cultural events, and optional excursions to historical sites and cities like Bratislava and Vienna.

The official website will be going up soon, and the sign-up form will go up at the same time, but I just wanted to get everyone thinking about attending. I expect the event will be loads of fun, and you'll have a chance to meet other lernu users, and regular Esperanto speakers from Eastern Europe (and hopefully from all over the world as well). I know that many of our users are students, and that cost is certainly an issue with events like this. For most people from English speaking countries, the prices (other than the cost of travel to get there) will seem cheap, so this is something that is affordable for anyone who can pay for the plane ticket to Europe.

I encourage everyone to consider attending!

Hi

The conference will go from August 9-17. You'll want to fly into Bratislava (closest) or Vienna (further, but still doable and also cheaper). I recommend going to Kayak.com to price it out, but in my sample search, I came up with prices of about $1400 USD (flying into Vienna) when flying out of Toronto or Ottawa (=1387 CAD, 920 EUR), or around $1000 USD coming out of New York City (usually the cheapest place to fly from on the east coast).

And just to catch the west coast, for the same sample dates, and also to Vienna, I got prices of $1500 USD flying from Vancouver, and $1200 USD flying from Los Angeles)

The registration cost for the entire program will be in the neighborhood of 10-50 Euros, depending on how early you register (earlier = cheaper) and what country you come from (you pay a bit more if you come from Western Europe, North America, or another affluent country). That is an estimate, since the cost has not been officially published yet. That includes all elements of the program; there is no separate cost for classes. Some excursions will have a separate cost but that hasn't been decided upon yet (and you can pick and choose what you do and don't want to participate in).

Food will cost about 80 Euros (=10 EUR per day) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for the entire week. You don't have to buy that option if you don't want, you can be a "memzorganto" and make your own food arrangements. Lodging in a shared room will be around 96 EUR for the entire week (=12 EUR per night)

And final disclaimer, these numbers haven't been officially published yet, and are subject to change.

thanks for the info Erinja. i'd love to go, but it is unlikely that i will have any money since i'm going to be a full time student lol. i might have to wait off till theres a confrence closer, or after university.

There's a conference in Montreal this summer. That would definitely be a cheaper flight for you from Calgary.

That's in mid-July. It's TAKE ("All-Americas Esperanto Conference"), and lasts a week. It will be held back to back with the annual convention of Esperanto-USA (the old ELNA, the US Esperanto society).

Here is the website:
http://www.take7.ca/

TAKE is held once every three years, somewhere in North or South America.

More about Summer Esperanto Study here.

I just translated information contained in Jasminka's link into English, so you guys can all read it now.

I hope that many of you will sign up. We hope to have most (it not all of) the core lernu! team present. Esperanto events have a very special atmosphere that I hope all of you will have a chance to experience!

That looks great, I wish I could come. I would for certain, if I were still living in UK. Transport from New Zealand is a bit of an issue... I hope it goes really well for you guys!
