Most people know that the real way a person develops their reading skills is by...well reading; and that this is also a way to develop better writing and speaking skills as it provides models.

When reading specifically fiction, as is the experience of most people in whatever languages they read, you don't just get entertained and learn words, you absorb grammar and structure. At the risk of sounding trite: you learn to master your tools.

Since I can't describe myself as an Esperanto expert, I often wonder what are the texts someone more discerning would recommend as providing good models for development? I really think this matters, because reading the Esperanto posts here can be as hit-and-miss as e.g. the good and bad English floating around the internet; whereas reading dependable books and periodicals - like I did when I was a child and a teenager and onward - put down a solid foundation.

Does anyone have recommendations? Not long lists of links to this or that, just a dependable well from which to draw when necessary, rather than a flood.

Try Marjorie Boulton's Faktoj kaj Fantazioj and Boris Kolker's Vojaĝo en Esperanto-lando. Another book I found useful for reading practice was Arthur Baur's La fenomeno Svislando.

You might find the magazine Monato useful as well.

Some of Claude Piron's writings can be found here:

For free books in Esperanto, this is the well from which to draw.

Are they all 100% perfect models of Esperanto usage? I don't know. Probably not 100%. But they're likely much better than the Lernu forums.

There's certainly a lot to choose from, as well.

Seems only fair to mention that this is your comic book!

This is Don Harlow's online archive of Esperanto literature, most of it high quality by well-known and not so well-known authors.

There are unfortunately a lot of broken links, Don died of cancer before his time, so he is no longer around to update his site or fix anything, but it remains an excellent resource with a ton of stuff, color coded by type (poetry, short stories, etc).

It looks like a good comic though.
