This scares me. I hope we never again end up under a government that censors and controls information like this. This is a akin to book burning (Example: Catcher and the Rye).

Oh, the censorship and control is much more sophisticated now. It did have benefits though; temporarily holding back the further spread of clapped-out ideology.

Who is "we"? Russia has always been authoritarian, but when was the last time that censorship of this sort happened in Canada, or the West generally, for that matter?

Spain until 1975. Portugal until 1976. East Germany of course until the fall of the wall.

There may be an argument to be made that information gathering and use, and censorship of it, has gained ground since the rise of the internet and associated technology. It may not be overt (too unsophisticated for today's 'democracies' ), but it is there.

There are several companies which openly sell hacking technology to governments.

There's no more need to act authoritarian. The proper computer technique will do the job.
