I'm getting close to the end of the duolingo course and I'm enjoying myself immensely. I set a goal of 20 XP per day but routinely destroy that. The game elements were a little cheesy when I started but I have to admit, they make it fun. It has helped me get a better handle on prepositions, conditional tenses and several other sticking points. Not to mention I've gotten my wife to start reviewing her Spanish (she won't try Esperanto ... yet). So, I'll give them credit where it's due and thank them for the effort made.

Now, if they would just hurry up with that Japanese course. *taps foot impatiently*

My wife's been brushing up on her German on Duolingo. It's another one of the reasons why I went through the course. On a side note, I think Esperanto on Duolingo is going to make some fertile fields for a bunch of little Esperanto groups in America. It's a good way to get conversation practice.

jdawdy:Is there any (self-study) language learning system/course that isn't pretty boring? It's just not an activity that is conducive to "fun". Personally, I find that the best to hope for is that whatever I am studying with isn't too painful. Duolingo generally meets that goal, but like any language study, it still requires some measure of just forcing yourself to do it.
He has only ever done self study courses in Esperanto. He enjoyed the Richardson book, he went through it cover to cover. He also enjoyed "Pasporto al la tuta mondo", watched it through a couple of times. He prefers being given a text to read, he enjoys the contents of some of the teaching texts, if it's well-written.

He got frustrated on some Duolingo phrases where the audio simply wasn't clear. In some cases I found it clear, in some cases not so clear. I think he just really didn't enjoy the disjointed phrases, out of any context whatsoever.

At least a few of the spoken phrases are not that clear. I was thinking maybe I should report them, but would they then be improved? In particular there is one that begins with a pronoun. I wasn't sure if it was mi, vi, ni, or li. It was very quickly spoken. Overall though the speaker is very good (by my northeast american ear.)

I noticed that with some of the Spanish track. I got DuoLingo mainly to learn Esperanto, but decided to brush up on my Spanish with the app as well (I took it in high school & college 10-15+ years ago, and it's used in my office to some degree). Some of the audio only, even with ear buds in, it's very difficult for me to completely understand what the speaker is saying. So it's not just thre Esperanto track.

I'll second that. I've had to use the "slow speech" button in the Spanish course more than once and still get things wrong. It's frustrating because I lived in Peru for two years and would like to believe that I haven't gotten that rusty. (Maybe it's mostly me; however, when the "e" sounds like an "a" even on the slow option, it's not JUST me.)
