My friend told me that he never heard of Esperanto before. In spite of this, he understands it really well.

I told my friend this:
Konfuze rigardu min, kaj tiam angle demandu "Kion vi diris?"

My friend followed my instructions exactly to the letter. How did he know what I was saying?

Is it really that surprising? Esperanto is based on many other languages, e.g. it takes its words mostly from Latin languages.

I am not good at languages (other than English, just because I've been learning it for a long time), I was learning Spanish for 6 years in school but was never good at it - but now it became my base for Esperanto. Not knowing Spanish well and Esperanto almost not at all (I'm almost always using the dictionary when writing anything), I can still tell more or less what you meant. - If your friend knows e.g. French well, he would be able to understand quite a bit.

Wow! You are absolutely right. This works with anybody, even with pets.

I just told my cat:
Kara kateto, konfuze rigardu min, kaj tiam diru "Miaŭ!"

And believe or not, he just did it!

Wow. Esperanto is amazing. This is giving me goosebumps. But, maybe your cat has been sitting on your computer desk secretly learning Esperanto without you knowing.
