Yes, because some (by no means all) of the E-o vocabulary has some origin in Romance words, study of Spanish (or any other Romance language) could cause interference. This is just the way it is. However, I do not think that this is a reason to discontinue your study of E-o. It just needs a little "mental stretching."

I'd recommend not completely quitting, if you like it and all. Think of it as fun rather than a "to-do". If you can't find the time or energy to study Esperanto via courses and books, try corresponding! That's what I find the most fun.

SPadern:I think you'll adapt in time. Learning Esperanto can help you during your studies of Spanish too, not just hinder them. Many roots are the same, and learning grammar concepts in Esperanto makes learning other languages much easier. At least that is my experience. Also I as a native spanish speaker can affirm that. Esperanto have many similar words with spanish and I suppose learning esperanto would help you.
I speak spanish, english and esperanto and so many times I find myself speaking in three languages!
I'm not sure about propedeuthical properties about Esperanto but that have many common roots, that's true!

It seems that lots of people confuse Esperanto for Spanish.
