Hello everyone, my name is Alejandra and I am studying Esperanto on my own. I have a lot of great materials and resources but my concern is that I don't know where to start. Since I don't have a tutor or a teacher, it's hard for me to come up with a lesson plan on my own. Does any one have any suggestions on where to start and what type of lesson plan an independent student of the language should take?

Dankon.

Hi

This is one of the Esperanto-language forums, you should preferably take your question to the English forum if you want to discuss the topic in English.

Having said that - at lernu, there are a range of courses at various levels. You can't really go wrong with following the sequence on this page: http://en.lernu.net/kursoj/index.php

Do one or both of the beginner courses (try a little of each and see which you prefer), then one or both of the intermediate courses, and so forth. Feel free to come to the forums with questions, people are pretty helpful here (come to the English forum if you want to ask in English, to the Esperanto forums if you want to ask in Esperanto, which is great language practice)

-----------

Saluton!

Erinja's comment is great, as far out as it goes. But she didn't tell you everything. IJK is kind of boring because you can just type the same sentence into box after box, not really learning anything. I dropped out of both it and, for reasons I will not discuss, Kio Okazas. Pick Christa627 as your tutor. Ignoring me is what she does when I say something she doesn't like, and now she completely ignores me. That's kind of lonely and cold, but I recommend her anyway because she is interested in Esperanto Wikipedia and she doesn't post her real name. One of the things she ignores (read: one of the things you shouldn't do with her) is profanity and even discussion about profanity. Don't ask her for advice on how to keep politeness in your conduct, just keep politeness in your conduct.

Don't attempt IJK, and you should probably not attempt Kio Okazas. I've done all the courses other than that, and the hardest parts are little things like guessing what Ana needs before going on vacation and getting past Zam's crisis of faith. The text boxes here erase your text after a few minutes, so press Crtl-AC before attempting to send. When Zam brings up religion, just use fiction to get past it. This isn't exactly the witness stand, no one is going to imprison you for perjury for lying to Zam about religion. When you're filling in the boxes to complete Ana's story, remember that humans can have very different beliefs, desires and intentions, and you should avoid relying on your worldview to infer things about Ana. The road to proficiency in Esperanto is a long one, so sometimes you need to look elsewhere for Esperanto texts that keep you awake during countless hours of study and are appropriate to your age. If you have any other problems in the courses, just ask your language tutor. One mistake I made is accepting coffee with milk or sugar. When coffee tastes good, it's too easy to OD on caffeine, so when accepting coffee, make sure it's "black".

Also, enter entire idioms as well as individual words into dictionaries, because they often have translations not just for individual words, but also for idioms and phrases. The dictionary Lernu provides is way too small, so if you can't find something there, then use DuckDuckGo to find another, larger dictionary. Don't use Google Translate, because it also uses deep learning (read: the computer program is actually a work animal because it's sentient now that it has neural nets in all but name). Google Translate's work is gibberish anyway.

Be careful about Vidpunktoj/Viewpoints. One of the inept things they do is that the frequency, diversity and importance of glittering generalities in their posts is excessive. Their Esperanto is terrible and their conduct sometimes crosses the line from irrational and unproficient into deformed conduct.

The part I haven't done yet is Lernado. The menu isn't as well organized, so I didn't find some of the stuff there.

I have managed quite well using DuoLingo and Memrise (both Android apps), plus the Ana Pana course on Lernu!

Mi estas studinta la lingvon nur dum 2 semajnoj. La Duolingo kurso estas tre facila, kaj Memrise estas tre utila kiam oni bezonas lerni la vortojn.

Both apps used spaced repetition. They record when you learned a particular word or construction, and then test you after a certain time. If you keep getting it right, they increase the time before the next test to stop you having to redo things you already know.

Mi pardonpetas ke mi ne respondis en Esperanto, sed mi ne parolas jam la lingvo tre bone.

Chris.

Ĉu la Angla forumo malaperis? Ĝi ne estis tre utila por lerni, nur por batali.
