Is "manĝo" a word?

I've seen that the word "manĝaĵo" is used often for "food" but I tend myself to just say "manĝo" and I wonder, is this a real word? Is it appropriate to say for the word "food"???

Yes, it's a real word, but it appears to be reserved for meal, not food...

"Manĝo" Is "eating".
"Matenmanĝo" Is "morning eating", i. e. "breakfast".
"Tagmanĝo" is "day eating", "dinner".
"Vespermanĝo" is "evening eating", "supper".
