edit 2: I decided that perhaps I need to post my question in English, even though someone who doesn't know Esperanto well probably wouldn't be able to answer my question anyway. But it is possible I made grammatical mistakes, so here's a translation of what I was trying to say:

I was more thinking about someone hearing someone say something, as in a sentence.

example: "He heard someone behind him yell 'hey!'."

Using 'ke' for a quote doesn't feel right to me. Though I can't seem to find any rules regarding actual quotations. But I'm guessing someone must have come up with something, there is supposedly literature in the language after all.

One thing I did think of though is to instead say something like 'He heard behind him someone who yelled 'hey!''

example: Li aŭdis malantaŭ si iun ke kriis 'he!'.

Though as we see, this does force you to use a specific order, all because of that adjectival clause (or a 'relative clause' as I think its known to non-linguists). Also, I feel like 'si' is logically required here, even though English doesn't do it this way.

Persone mi preferus tri eĉ pli elegantajn kaj pli kompreneblajn variantojn:

1. Li aŭdis, ke iu malantaŭe kriis "He!"

2. Li aŭdis iun malantaŭe krii "He!"

3. Li aŭdis ies krion malantaŭe: "He!"
