I would like to start a discussion on the benefits of having a live helpline session on Lernu.
As a novice I think it would be a great help to have users who could operate a service via a program like Skype and provide a live help session on Esperanto pronunciation and structure.

It would need a number of users who have a good working knowledge of Eo to kindly donate an amount of time to help with novices, I think it would help raise the profile of Esperanto and be a plus point for Lernu.

The idea would need some discussion to enable more than one user and helper to be live at the same time, maybe a rota of helpers and time slots for novices?

What do people think?

Sorry I have not posted this in the Esperanto section, I do not have the knowledge yet to translate it into workable Esperanto.

We have in the past had something called a "virtual classroom", where an instructor was online to either teach a lesson or answer questions from users at a pre-arranged time. That was integrated into the lernu! site. We haven't had those in a while, and not since we moved over to the new site, but as soon as some programming issues are taken care of, we plan to revive the classrooms.

But your idea about skype is a good one and I will certainly pass it along to the lernu! team.

I don't reccomend Skype at all. I've heard it eats up your CPU speed and makes your computer act as a server or something when it's idle... Basically processing OTHER people's calls.. (Though I DO know that many people use the program.)

I recommend Gizmo, only because you can also record the conversation and play it back as well as being able to host a more than 5 person conference. I think that's an added feature for someone that wants to learn, they can play it over and over again until they get it right. :/

I've also used GoogleTalk, but not for any length of time...Which also might be a good choice, maybe get a Google/Googletalk lernu/esperanto group going... I don't know, I'm just throwing out ideas

I would like to see a helpline as well, though my Esperanto is so basic it's almost funny. I guess the problem is finding more advanced people to "man the lines" and do it on a volunteer basis.

I am looking at options for allowing 12/24 people to be connected in a session. A mate of mine has a similar setup for his multi player gaming.

I will see what I can find and pass it onto the team at Lernu.

I hate to say that programs like Ventrilo and TeamSpeak while they can allow for 12/24 people don't really have the best quality audio. Many times I've had people break up or came though so bad I had to ask them to repeat.
However it would be a step in the right direction. I know TeamSpeak has free servers. Though they don't have a 'chat' area that one can clarify themselves with..even then ANYONE can join it if it doesn't have a password...

I honestly haven't fiddled around with ventrilo much...

Also another way to spread Eo is to set up a community in games and whatnot. Like for the game I play Final Fantasy XI, there is no Eo 'LinkShell' on any of the servers (that I know of.) However starting an Eo LS would be hard since I'm a mere 'mortal'

(La Movado de la Verda Stelo) but it only has 6 members.

Ventrilo does have the Codecs to improve sound, but they are a chargeable extra.

My mate plays Dark Ages of Camalot and they have a subscription of $5 a month for a 12 slot system. This works well for his guild, and they are in various locations, (UK,DK,DE,USA).

It would be a good idea to setup a group for Eo that game players use, I will ask if DAoC has one. It may help you get more Eo speaking players for FF by posting it on here.

It would be the way to go by testing some of the free ones out though.
