I am new to the site, and very much a beginner at Esperanto.

I am part of an online project - http://librilang.org - which aims to use a wikipedia-like approach to translating works from one language into another.

Unfortunately, my enthusiasm for the project is not matched by a great deal of linguistic ability! Therefore, I hope to use Esperanto to help me translate works - from the project gutenberg site - which are currently in Esperanto, into English, where no translation currently exists.

So, my first humble efforts are at the link above (Batalo Pri La Domo Heikkila by Johannes Linnankoski), If anyone wants to come and critique them, or replace my attempt with something superior, you are more than welcome.

In the meantime, I hope to refine my skills until I have a useful knowledge of the language. Wish me luck!

Lastly - I cannot find 'verkadon' in the dictionary. Why might that be?

The reason is that Esperanto dictionaries often concentrate on the roots from which words are built up, to save space. (This is one reason for having the system of suffixes in Esperanto - to simplify vocabulary). If you know that ad is used for a continuous or repetitive action (or an activity considered as a whole) then you don't need it. Likewise if you know the accusative functions of -n, that can be left out. Try and put verki by itself in the dictionary, or even just the letters of the root verk.

Thanks Miland.
Part of me knew that - I was trying to look up 'ver-' and 'kad-'.
I will have a closer look at the suffixes.

I am still impressed with how simple is it to work out the sentences, based on my very limited knowledge of the language.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi Chris, and welcome in Lernu,

Thank you, Jan.

I am using 'Gerda Malaperis' to try and improve my EO.
That, and working through the translation I have chosen word by word. Quite fun!

I have finished translating the introduction 'Batalo Pri La Domo Heikkila', starting from a cold start.

I have yet to polish things up, but I quite pleased with my ability to understand Esperanto, with reference only to an online dictionary. I hope Dr Zamenhof would be proud.

I am now learning from a book, which should speed things up, rather than doing things the hard way.
