Apart from idiomatic forms (e.g., "to meet opposition", "to meet halfway", "to meet with" and the likes) and more particular forms of compound tenses ("he will be being met", etc), I can't think of other possible translations of the word 'met'.

It is mostly used for targets, buses, trains, guessing, shooting, and so on. I've seen 'trafi' used the way you did, but I think that I would still use 'renkonti' for your example, or at the very least I would say "ni trafis unu la alian". My first, instinctive translation of "ni trafis post lernejo" is "we got (it) right after school", or "we hit after school". When "trafi" is used to mean "to meet", "to run across", it conveys, at least to me, the feeling that there was a plan, that it didn't happen entirely by chance, or that the meeting amounted to something.

My dictionary also suggests (inter)kruciĝi, but somehow I think that translation is too influenced by Italian. I would just stay on 'renkonti', possibly using an adverb to give it a nuanced meaning ("ni renkontiĝis [tute] hazarde").

It might be suitable for spotting someone at a police identification parade. But for bumping into a friend ekrenkonti or neatendite renkonti (unu la alian, since renkonti is also transitive) might be better.

Lots of people about to undertake an activity fall into this trap of thinking "there's no object expressed so ..." and will say "Ĉu ni komenciĝu?", even though this is logically impossible.
The same is true of the example you cited. The object "nin" is logically understood (the same as "la lecionon" is in my example).
It might be open to misinterpretation by some, but to say that a transitive verb "cannot be used in this" way is inaccurate, as elaborated above.
