Just stumbled upon this thread, and I just wanted to say that I met my girlfriend on Lernu. Yeah, that 'texting buddy' thing went a bit further than 'texting buddy'. It's a bigger story than just Lernu and Esperanto is no more than a mild interest for either of us now, but we met because of Esperanto. Just thought I'd share.

We did meet to practise and share our interest in the language, and that was our foremost intention. The rest happened by coincidence over the following months.
So yes, I can confirm that it may happen over Lernu, but those who join the Lernu community for that sole purpose are purely idiotic.

Given lernu!'s raving reputation as a dating site okulumo.gif

On this now-necroed topic, if I might add a dime, I think one major thing is that nerdy guys tend to go out searching for interesting things, where as nerdy chicks tend to work their way out gradually by looking into everything around them.

At least, of those I know, the guys are most likely to move on to different things, or find a strong hobby/object of affection way out of sight, where as the girls are normally more booky types, reading about things immediately around them and gradually moving out.

Which makes sense from a hunter-gatherer point of view, where the men are out hunting in extravagant/stupid (lango.gif) ways, where as the women are back home organising things from a more maternal but also social point of view, and we see just remnants of that today (even less so though, as more and more guys become increasingly "effeminate" and more and more girls become increasingly "masculine".

But I doubt vestigial instinct is the whole story okulumo.gif

(another more controversial idea: chicks are out meeting nice, particularly popular guys, while the rest of these chums are single and have lots of time on their hands, or married and have lots of time on their hands okulumo.gif - joking!)

I expect the sex ratio would sort itself out when it becomes a more 'normal' thing to learn Esperanto.

So the solution might be just to carry on beavering away at reaching 100 million speakers.

In the meantime, I can confirm that in the UK the sex ratio is extreme, with males massively outnumbering the females in the movement, though I did once see a very pretty girl at a British Congress.

So she counts for multiple people? rido.gif

Maybe we can slant the figures a bit by going "Ok, most of us fellas are pretty ugly zam2.gif (ergo counting as negative points)... OK, there you go, gender ratio problem alleviated!" okulumo.gif

A man does not need to be pretty, it is enough that he is wise...

I've been to several Esperanto conventions in Central and Eastern Europe, and although I didn't count, I think the gender ratio was quite balanced. In fact, most of my Esperanto friends are female.

Oh, how I wish it was that easy, haha. But that's definitely a good thing to remember, wisdom over looks okulumo.gif

fojo:I am tired of the scarcity of females in la esperantujo. What's wrong with e-o for them? Half joking rido.gif rido.gif rido.gif (only half)
I don't think the ladies see anything wrong with e-o. In Brazil and (particularly) in Eastern Europe, they seem to outnumber men. sal.gif
