I have literally just signed on in the last 24 hours to learn Esperanto. I was really enjoying the first exercise until I had to use the "x-method" for an answer. For some reason it won't work. I am using a Mac with OS X 10.4.11. I have tried various permutations but can't seem to get the superscript to appear and, thus, can't proceed with the lesson. Any suggestions?

Hi Mojo Jo JO,

I hadn't had any problem with using the "x" method in the tutorials, but I wouldn't think it to be an OS thing.

ie: sx = ŝ

Is that how you're typing it?

Or are you using the "s'x" thing? That doesn't work for me, not sure if that's even the official way to do it, I've always seen it as "sx".

I'll try to help you through it.

Hi webgovernor,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I was using the "s'x" thing, which doesn't work for me either. However, "sx" does work. Thanks for that!

You're welcome Mojo.

I think that they should probably change the tutorial to be a little more clear, the single quote probably exists to show separation, but I was also confused by this.

I'm glad it's working for you, and I wish you luck with learning Esperanto!

Hi,

I am also using Mac OS X 10.4.11 on a Powerbook.

I select "U.S. extended" (not US) as keyboard layout.

Go to "system preferences/international/input menu and select the keyboard options. You can then also select "show keyboard viewer" to see the keyboard layout on the screen.

Thereby it is possible to get the "roof" e.g. ĉ with "alt + 6" and then you type the letter (e.g. c). The ŭ you get with "alt + b" and then the u. It sounds complicated, but once you use it a couple of times, it is as easy as other signs.
