Is there a difference between verkisto and aŭtoro, or are they synonyms? As far as I can tell, they are interchangeable, though verkisto seems to be preferred by a wide margin.

AFAIK they are synonyms. Both are fundamental, but the root of former is in the verb verki. I have no facts to back up my claim, but my gut feeling is that verb roots seem to be more productive in Esperanto and thereby often preferred, which could explain why verkisto leads by a wide margin.
