Eastern Iowa now has an Esperanto-speakers Meet-Up group. The unfortunate part is that, so far, it's just me! Any and all Iowan esperantists (present or future!) are welcome as are any from Western Illinois (or anywhere actually!) that are willing to drive to Iowa City.

info: http://www.meetup.com/orieso/

Note: the day and time are somewhat flexible. The only other day that might be more suitable is Sunday. Time on Sunday is very flexible (I.e. anytime after noon). Something to consider if you can't make on Thursdays as 5:30, but ya gotta let me know!

Howdy! I realize that this is an older topic; however, I just wanted to let you know that when I get out of the Navy (which will probably be some 10 years or so! ; ) ), my husband and I are settling down in Creston. So there will be at least one other Esperanto speaker in Iowa at some point (well, one-and-a-half; my 1-yr old knows how to say "bonege!").

This is an old topic, however, I live in Dubuque, and would love to have an Esperanto meeting in Eastern Iowa. Iowa City and the Quad Cities would be fine for me, as I have relatives in both areas. It looks like there are already two people who live in Eastern Iowa who would be interested in a meeting; that link to the meetup page is broken.

Indeed, an old topic, but a welcome one!

I just posted a response in another thread about my desire to meet real, live Esperantists “in-the-flesh”; i.e. fleshperantistoj. After suffering through nine-months of a Lernu addiction, I'm ready to take a road trip to meet some fleshperantistoj.

I was actually planning on visiting the group in Chicago later this summer, but you guys are a few hundred miles closer to Cheyenne, WY. I'm targeting the weekend after Labor Day. I'll let you know an exact preference in a few weeks.

I saw your reply in patrik's thread. Because of your proximity to me, I decided to do some research about Esperantanists in Iowa. I came upon this thread. I love that word "fleshperantanists". I am still a beginner in Esperanto, and there are many words that I still do not know, but I have a fairly good vocabulary, and would love to go to an Esperanto renkontiĝo. I am only 13 (soon to be 14), so I am not sure how that would effect alcohol usage there (I have been to family events where there has been alcohol, but I was always with my parents). Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, the lady in the first link has passed away, and for weeks afterwards it was just me sitting forlornly with an E-o book or the latest issue of Monato, and failing those, the Esperanto Wikipedia. I decided to stop after a couple months, but I'd be more than happy to meet up with you on a more informal basis anytime! Just let me know when you might be in town and I can make arrangements.

I'm sorry that Sue passed away. I guess it's just the three of us, unless there are others. It's great that there's an Esperanto meetup in Chicago. It looks like it costs money to join, though. The information they have provided for it is below.

4th Tuesday each month (la kvaran mardon de ciu monato) at 7:00 pm, except December and June or as indicated below at:
Conrad Sulzer Library
4455 N. Lincoln Ave.,
1st Floor South Meeting Room
Chicago, Illinois
(Ravenswood neighborhood)

Considering that Iowa City is closer for all of us, we should probably meet there. Should it be a potluck? We could all bring some food with us. We'd have to find a place to meet, too. Perhaps at orthohawk's house?
Labor Day weekend is a while away, so I'll have time to finish up learning Esperanto, hopefully reaching fluency finally.

josephschwenker:so I am not sure how that would effect alcohol usage there ...
Have no fear, I consume lemonade by the gallon (trinki), but urge everyone to permanently avoid the real stuff (drinki) and, in fact, do no "drinki" whatsoever. This personal preference didn't keep my from finding the Radio Verda episode on alcohol that I mentioned in the other thread humorous!

Yay! Another person against drinking! I love lemonade, though find that powdered green tea often tastes similar.
