Saluton!

Just started Esperanto on to the weekend and finishing lesson three of the basic course today.

When is a good time to look for a practice language partner? After finishing the basic course? Its just that I want to develop my conversational skills ASAP as I believe that is my weakest point.

Thanks.

John

I guess after you've finished the basic course, yes.
I haven't spoken with anyone orally, but have used the "Tujmesaĝilo" (instant messenger on lernu!) a few times. I also have asked a couple people to start learning it sometime, so maybe I'll have a partner in the near future.

You should seek out someone to talk to when you feel you're ready (or sooner if you think it would benefit you more). If you're not yet confident enough to try, there are a few things you could do.

To increase your passive understanding of Esperanto, you might benefit from listening to Esperanto radio (for example at radioarkivo.org). The audio version of the 'Mi estas komencanto' course at this site might also help with your passive understanding, and it could also make certain common responses to questions rise faster to your brain.

Trying to translate your thoughts might help you form sentences faster, but there's no real substitute for talking person-to-person. Maybe see if there are any Esperanto Clubs in your area.

Don't forget about the Esperanto language forums right here! On those we're ALL your language partners.

I know that sometimes beginners may be a bit intimidated by those forums, but anyone who is shouldn't be. It's just *us* over there; we don't bite here, we don't bite there, either.

All we ask is that you write ONLY in Esperanto on those boards. But even simple first trys are accepted. Come on over! The practice is good for you.

Even then feel free to write in Esperanto here (with an English translation of course for other learners) okulumo.gif

Hi,

If you want to practice orally, you can find other esperantist living in your time registered in Lernu http://eo.lernu.net/komunikado/uzantoj/listo.php...

Maybe by the net you can find out a local association

It's not clear from your profile whether you are at present in Liverpool or the Dutch West Indies (if AN = Antilles). But this page has the contact information for the Liverpool branch of the EAB. Esperanto House in Barlaston may also be able to help you.

ridulo.gif,
I think the link is a little wrong (it sent me to a non-existent page), but I must be the only active Lernu member from Adelaide malgajo.gif

If you can find another Esperantist or club near you, I would encourage you to get in touch as soon as you can. Live conversation practice is quite useful, not to mention fun and motivating!
