tommjames:How about if we used quote marks around the adjectivial construct, to somehow lessen the need to have it accord correctly with the grammar?

La vivo estas "bezono scii" operacio.

Would that be meaningful/permissable do you think?
I believe you should still grammatically combine it with the following noun using a hyphen:
La vivo estas "bezono scii"-operacio.
Esperanto doesn't string nouns together with spaces between them like English does.
More in the spirit of Esperanto (for me) would be:
La vivo estas operacio bazita sur la bezono scii.
or something similar. But I don't see an obvious natural way to concisely capture the "feel" of the English original, which is pretty loosey-goosey about syntax and the roles of words.

tommjames:"bezono scii"
That sounds all right, if we add the adjectival modification Russ suggested.
Using this idea, I would say that bezonscia, 'Needed information' or 'information related to need' might get the meaning across. I also considered necesa informa, necesoscia and similar variants.

But at the end of the day, I would still give the prize to the solution you came up with so quickly!
