richardhall:So here's my question. Does anyone have any handy hints for someone like me who is trying to learn two (very different) languages at the same time? I enjoy the Esperanto community and I don't want to lose that, but learning Welsh is a commitment I've made to my employers so I'm obliged to do that. Can I have both?
Of course it's possible to study two languages at the same time, especially Esperanto since it's a fairly simple language. Studying two similar languages at the same time can be confusing, but Esperanto and Welsh are very different, which helps in my opinion.

I'm curious: how did learning Welsh ended up being a commitment to an employer?

That is so neat! I've never been to your part of Wales. All of my customers are in the South, close to the M4. I've heard that Welsh is more frequently spoken in your part of the country. Are the Methodists the only church to provide bilingual worship or do the other denominations offer this also? I think it is a wonderful thing.

BTW, if you ever get to Newport, there is a small street named Esperanto Way located very close to the transporter bridge. I found it because it is in the same industrial estate as one of my customers. I assumed there was a story there, but noone knew what it was.

Welsh is more widely spoken over in the top left corner of Wales than it is here in the top right. Wrexham itself has a fairly confused sense of identity. Until recently I was down in Swansea, which feels its Welshness keenly, even if not many speak the language.

Bilingual worship is fairly rare and tends to be on ecumenical occasions. The "Church in Wales" (Anglican) is probably where you'd be most likely to come across it on an ordinary Sunday.

Next time I'm in Newport, I'll try to look up Esperanto Way. I think that there's still an active E-o group in Newport, one of the only ones in Wales.

It sounds like you've spent some time in this part of the world. Do you come this way often?

Here's something that may encourage you to work at both Welsh and Esperanto: next year's Brita Kongreso de Esperanto will be in Llandudno!

Hello Richard:

Yes, I have spent a lot of time in Wales. We have several customers in Newport, and a few in Cardiff and Port Talbot. My company makes equipment for fabricating steel, so it is not unusual for our customers to locate their operations close to a steel works.

I did not know there was an active E-O group in Newport. I suspected as much after finding the street, but I couldn't find any information on them in any directories. If you have any information, I would be very grateful. I shouldn't be surprised if I were to come back to Wales again in the future.

I've been exchanging email with one of the organizers this week. Looks like I'll be at my first Kongreso in 2010!

The Orthodox church in Blaenau Ffestiniog does liturgy in Welsh. The priest is a native speaker as I recall. I believe the parish in Lampeter does some of their services yng Nghymraeg as well.

There's lots of worship going on in Welsh, of course. And, come the Kongreso, there'll be a little in la lingvo internacia too.
