A way to import text?

Hi all,

Is there a way to import arbitrary text to use with the lernu dictionary system? I want to increase my vocabulary through reading, but rather than look up a word every time I find a new one and writing it in the margins I'd like to be able to just click and see it. I could post a new thread in the sandbox forum every time I wanted to read something, but I don't think it would be appreciated. lango.gif

I don't think there is, but there is another possibility: you could start a new thread, bookmark it, then just edit the post every time you want to do this with text, instead of flooding it with posts for your texts. rideto.gif

I suggest the following:
1. Study well the vocabulary in the classified lists on this webpage. That way you won't have to look up the most frequent words.
2. Start a vocabulary notebook and make a note of new words as you come across them. Now and then study the lot, as if for exams (which you may well wish to attempt at some stage). To this end, break them up into blocks of 20-25 words as convenient units of study suitable for a sitting.

I found something that sounds similar to your description - from what I gather, you just want a tool that gives definitions for pretty all the words in the text? Well, it's not quite as clean as the lernu system but http://www.kafejo.com/lingvoj/auxlangs/eo/tradukilo is implemented well enough as far as I am concerned.

On a completely unrelated topic, anyone else finding MS' new pet project "bing" highly irritating? I tried to search for that link and it just does not want to find it. ARGH!

EDIT: NOTE: The link I provided can give definitions but very literal definitions, e.g. "is there ...?" is translated as "estas tie ...?" (which is wrong, it should just be 'estas')

Thanks for the suggestions! Lernu's system is really perfect because rather than stop and look something up in a dictionary and forget what it's context was every time I find a new word I'd like to just click to see it's definition and learn it gradually through familiarity. Taking notes is probably a good idea for later reference though.

Actually, it would be kind of nice if Lernu had a page where you could paste in any block of Esperanto text, and then it would treat it as if it were part of a forum thread (i.e., display what you pasted and allow you to click on any word and have the definition supplied) without actually having to permanently post the text anywhere. Almost like having a temporary personal forum post, that you could just use to aid in reading a block of text. Once you were done, you could just navigate away from the page and it would disappear permanently.

Maybe not quite what you are after, but if you paste a passage into Tradukilu

http://www.kafejo.com/lingvoj/auxlangs/eo/traduk...

it will give you a dictionary listing of every word in the passage it knows.
