Am I right on this or what?

Electric Prophet:Can someone help me understand? Are the exams that you can opt to take different from occur periodically through lessons? I passed the first exam I took. Then I failed the second one and it bumped me back to lesson 11 (not fun).Do you mean the ones in the "Examinations" section when you refer to the ones you can opt to take? When you take those, they have no bearing whatsoever on the courses you're working on, and they won't bump you back.

I think "Vojagxu kun Zam" is the only course that has exams sprinkled throughout the course rather than one at the end; is that the course you're working on? None of the other exams on the site will affect your placement in lessons. The worst that they do if you fail is prevent you from taking the exam again for a period of time (a week or two, I think).
Incidentally even the basic level exam in the "Examinations" section is not very easy so I wouldn't advise even trying it until you have finished several basic-level courses.

What I'm confused about is this: what are the exams for? Not the ones that are in my lessons, but the exams that can be taken online here, what are they for?

The exam are elaborate exam to test your knowledge of the Espenrato language as a whole. You should consider those only if you can fully read/listen to a whole text/speech without using "la vortaro" (I'm not there yet).

They're for your benefit, to give you an indication of where you are in your studies, and what areas you might still need to focus on.
That, and bragging rights that "Hey, I passed the intermediate exam!" That's all, really, though.
Erinja is right, though - they aren't cakewalks. I had to take the basic exam several times before I passed it, and that was after many months of study. I haven't even attempted the next one yet, and I've been learning eo for coming on a year and a half now.

Having said this I think it's a great learning experience, and as RiotNrrd already mentioned, it's a wonderful way of pointing out bits of the language that you need to work harder on. It certainly worked that way for me when I took a pilot version of the advanced exam!
