Shatner got the accent wrong on many words, but was closer to an accurate delivery than any other actor. I think he did well, considering that he had to memorize lines that in themselves meant nothing to him.

I am only an Esperanto beginner, but I had the feeling that the accent of Kia was much better. However, it might be that an English/American accent sounds more familiar to somebody from the US.
One thing e.g. was, that Shatner called the main actress [kaia] instead of [kia]. This might sound correct for an English-speaking person, but obviously, it's not the way the name is supposed to be pronounced. It's only one example, but throughout the film there are many more, not to say Shatner's whole pronunciation sounded a bit strange (OK, that might sound arrogant from an beginner, but the pronunciation in Esperanto is rather close to German).
We watched part of the movie "Mazi en Gondolando" and the speakers (obviously, mostly English-speaking origin) also pronounced many words as if they were English...

I justified the mispronunciation of her name in the fact that we never saw it written (except in subtitles), so technically the real name could have been "Kaja" in Esperanto.

Anyway, if you look about reviews about the film (e.g. at imdb.com or ofdb.de) you will also see the name written as Kia.
Since the movie reminded me of some Ingmar Bergman movies (e.g. Jungfrukällen, Sjunde Inseglet), I will certainly watch it again, soon, and look at some aspects discussed here.

EL_NEBULOSO:Yes, I know. Their pronunciation is without a basis. But I think name pronunciation isn't that important anyway. If there is a person named "George", we will still pronounce his name as "Ĝorĝ" in Esperanto, even though we should technically call him "Geh-or-geh" if we wanted to pronounce his name true to the Esperanto spelling. And as I said, the "Kaja" was more of a justification for the pronunciation. I don't think the producers actually had that spelling in mind. But I suspect they chose the pronunciation before they chose the spelling of the name, and didn't pay attention to the fact that the spelling didn't make sense in an Esperanto context.

For anyone unfamiliar with the show, it's basically a man and two robots in silhouette at the bottom of the TV screen, watching bad old movies and making fun of them as they watch.
Incidentally, I have the distinct honor of having a relative who was in a movie bad enough to be featured on MST3K. The movie was "The Incredible Melting Man", and my dad's cousin was the melting man. No joke!

Some of the MST3K movies are.Speaking of relatives in cinema, my cousin was in the movie Little Monsters with Howie Mandel & Fred Savage in the late 80's. He played a character they called "Froggie". (His name was Todd in the movie). Now my cousin is a venture capitolist. I guess he likes that more than his stint on Wonder Years

None of the "u" was really pronounced like an u should be in Esperanto.
It's a Latin word, so it should be pronounced like in Latin or Esperanto (or Italian, or German).

There were a lot of other words with strange pronunciation, mostly English/American, sometimes also French sounding...
Still, I really liked the movie and the fact that Shatner played in the movie rather makes it worth watching also for people other than hardcore Esperantists.

EL_NEBULOSO:Hi,This was just the English title. The Esperanto title is "Inkubo", pronounced according to the usual Esperanto rules.
