Saluton!

I wondered, whether anybody from you has seen the movie Incubus. It was made in 1965, filmed totally in Esperanto. Subtitles in French or English/French, depending on the copy. Pre-Star Trek William Shatner is starring and supposedly, the movie is quite entertaining. To my knowledge, it's the only commercially available Esperanto movie on DVD.

The movie seemed lost for a long time, but finally, a copy was found in Paris.

The first movie filmed in Esperanto was Angoroj (1964) but it seems, it's not available anywhere.

I ordered the movie in the US and it was sent 3 weeks ago, so it should arrive soon. Once I have watched it, I will give a short review, here.

In case somebody has watched it, please, feel free to comment! rido.gif

Ĝis, Gerald

Hi, I saw it, and I own it. While it is not cinematic excellence, it's fun to watch Billy Shatner speak Esperanto!
While the pronunciation is a little off, and the main lady speak with no feeling (she has no idea what she is saying), it's fun to watch.

Mi volas pli da filmoj Esperante!

I recently received a copy. I found it useful having subtitles, as I've only been learning Esperanto for 2 weeks. ridulo.gif

Bill Shatner's accent didn't seem too bad, but many of the other cast members gave a very 'flat' delivery.

Shatner sometimes used the 'pause' affect during his delivery in the way that does in Star Trek.

Ĝis,
Tim

I thought his accent was pretty bad, I think there was maybe one person in the movie who had an ok accent.

Actually Shatner seemed to think that Esperanto was French. He has evidently studied French at some point (perhaps because he is Canadian?) but I noticed that he pronounced quite a few words with elements of French pronunciation.

Incidentally YouTube has a 7-minute clip from Angoroj: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_SgfyK1tj8

(with a nice strong French accent! but in spite of that still generally better Esperanto pronunciation than in Incubus, you can tell the speaker knows what he is saying, too)

At the end of the clip, there's information on how to buy a VHS tape of the movie from an Esperanto society in Switzerland (I suspect it would be in PAL format)

And even more incidentally if you haven't been there, Farbskatol' (sort of an Esperanto YouTube) has some fun short homemade films in Esperanto (some better than others). http://farbskatol.net/

Saluton!

I am very positively surprised about your comments and about the links. I will dig deeper into the matter ridulo.gif

Also, since I started to learn Esperanto only 2-3 weeks ago, it will be fun to watch the movie soon (I should receive it within the next days) and then later, when I am more proficient.

I wonder, whether I will recognize a big difference.

Ĝis, Gerald

Very strange!

Just watched the clip from Angoroj and I had the feeling that there was hardly a word that I did not understand. As Erinja mentioned, a very nice and strong French accent. I also had the feeling that the narrator knew what he was talking about and not just pronouncing some words.

Let's see, I am even more eager now to watch the movie Incubus, soon!

I'm moving to my new flat in Wien (Vienna) next week and Incubus will definitely be one of the first movies I watch in my new home cinema.

In case I get a VHS copy of Angoroj, I might even re-activate my good old VHS-player.

A plus, Gerald

I do confirm Cpt. Kirk does speak French as he is native from Montreal. There even is a building named in his honor at Concordia University where he studied (and did little more than start a riot...).

I do have a question for those that did see the movie. Was he overacting just as much as he did in ST?

Shatner is positively restrained compared to his Captain Kirk persona. He does pause for emphasis a little as Haelen said although not so much in the "hammy" way he is known for in his later work. Overall I thought he did a pretty good job apart from the accent.

The first time I watched it I really liked his accent because I had never studied Esperanto. That's right I bought Incubus because I'm a Shatner fan. Esperanto came afterwards! lango.gif Anyway, I "like" Shatner's bad accent much more than Allyson Ames' bad accent (she plays Kia the Succubus). Her delivery is so flat and emotionless.

Funny you should mention this, I had completely forgotten there was a character named "Kia" in the movie. I always thought it was funny that in an Esperanto movie, they named a character with an Esperanto word. Can you imagine an English movie with a character named "Whatkind"?

Kia is on third base, Kiu is on first... lango.gif
