Hej ĉiuj.
I'm thinking of making another podcast, and one potential story is on the English language. My problem is this though - I think I have a few awkward ways of saying EO equivalents of slightly idiomatic English words. Here is the text. I don't mind if it's a little unique, but if it just plain doesn't make sense then I feel that it may be in need of an improvement. I'll bolden the areas I already have doubts about lango.gif.

La angla lingvo estas, historie, la denasklingvo de la anglaj personoj. La unua sciata versio de la lingvo estas 'Ealde Englisċ' (traduko: 'maljuna angla lingvo'). Tio ĉi lingvo estis parolata ĝis ĉirkaŭ la jaro unumil unucent kvindek, sed nuntempe la infano de la maljuna angla lingvo estas parolata monde pro la historio de la angla koloniado.

Traduko: The English language is, historically, the motherlanguage of the English people. The first known version of the language is 'Ealde Englisċ' ('Airlde 'Ehnglish). This language was spoken (I use '-ata' to give the sense that it was being spoken and was already spoken in a discontinuous manner) until around the year 1150, but currently the child of old english is spoken across the world (tutmonde probably would be better, but monde is faster, less syllables etc, no big deal though im just a minimalist) because of the history of the english colonisation.

I'll try and post the verbal version too, but note that I have some odd pronunciation habits - e.g. 'koloniado' sounds more like 'kolonnjado' lango.gif
- Verbal version probably will have to wait though, having trouble getting it off of my iphone onto my desktop.

also 2 more questions: what is the way to say 'another' (e.g. 'another question') and how do you say 'I have more questions' or 'Would you like more (in reference to a dish)?'?

Another? Where's the first one? rido.gif

Suggested revisions (I won't repeat jchthys's good suggestions): malnova instead of maljuna; ido, 'offspring', not infano. Tra la tuta mondo may be more helpful than monde, although monde is certainly a clever way of saying 'across the world', and if such a use of monde catches on, it might be a good thing.
ceigered: more questions: what is the way to say ..'Would you like more (in reference to a dish)?'?
Ĉu plaĉus al vi pli? (This is only an additional possibility, there's nothing wrong with jchthys's suggestion)

By the way, if anyone would want any voice work for an Esperanto podcast, I’d be happy to volunteer. Actually I’d like to do one myself (with someone helping if possible—something like Radio Verda), but I don’t know if I’ll have the time in the near future.

Re: "maljuna angla lingvo." I agree with Miland that "malnova" is better than "maljuna," but probably "antikva" would be better than either of the "mal-" words. After all, the language being discussed is more than merely "not new," it's ancient.

Cheers lads, and jchthys that was a helpful explanation of 'another' - pity for me that it's not so literally translated as with French (un autre lango.gif)

@ Miland:

It was intended to end up as a podcast but I got bored. Gaming reviews aren't very engaging.. It's no fun when you can't spoil the plot lango.gif

And I always thought ido was, well an ido word or nonstandard. Otherwise I would have used that malgajo.gif

Back to everyone:
1. So we can simplify numbers to just 'mil cent' without 'unu'?
2. I thought 'u' forms of 'io/iu' correlatives were only used when describing an object? So why can it be used without an object? Or is 'u' acceptable as long as the object it describes, literally or abstractly, has been mentioned?

And jchthys I'd ask you if you'd like to help but we have this big sea in between our continents lango.gif
Plus I'm not sure if I'm going to go ahead with this as a full blown idea, this is just conceptual stages.
If you ever do your own podcast I'd be happy to help though lango.gif

ceigered:1. So we can simplify numbers to just 'mil cent' without 'unu'?
Surely! Mil is a number just as much as kvar is! We don't need to treat hundreds and thousands as second-class citizens like some other languages do! rideto.gif

I just remembered that we have an Esperanto prefix for this sort of thing: pra-angla.

Good stuff, and your Esperanto sounds pretty good. A few suggestions for revision ('A' stands for anstataŭ): Jen A Tio ĉi estas; faris koloniojn A koloniigis (also, the latter is a transitive form that takes an object!); laŭ la modo A en la modo; vidpunkto A perspektivo (the latter is a falsa amiko and means 'prospects' as in career prospects); al A por (por means 'in order to', not quite 'for' in English).
ceigered:And I always thought ido was, well an ido word or nonstandard. Otherwise I would have used that malgajo.gif
Actually Ido got its name from the Esperanto suffix id. See PMEG.
ceigered:1. So we can simplify numbers to just 'mil cent' without 'unu'?
Yes.
ceigered:2. I thought 'u' forms of 'io/iu' correlatives were..
'U' forms are for clearly defined individual things. So Tiu means 'that (one)' whereas tio means 'that' in a less clearly defined sense, as in 'I like that'.

A question about por vs. al - using my linked review as an example, would it be better to have:
'La podkasto al tiu ĉi recenzo'
ol
'La podkasto por tiu ĉi recenzo'

and

'mi donas X stelojn al ĝi'
ol
'mi donas X stelojn por ĝi'

(in retrospect, it should of been 'mi donas x stelojn AL ĝi', but I'm still not sure about the very first example - maybe that should of been 'jen la podkasto de tiu ĉi recenzo'?

'part from that I understand your suggestions. And I guess treating 'mil' and 'cent' as 2nd class citizens is pretty illogical too, as 'ten' is never 'one-ten' lango.gif

Re 'pra-', that reminds me of a Russian suffix that I found yesterday when trying to sort through indo-european roots to find common ground - I think that suffix described 'great' - as in 'great grandpa' (not 'great' as in 'big'). (in regards to the little sorting I was doing:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AaT9u4rH1NdFZGZ4...

And finally in regards to 'tiu', I take it then that 'Mi sxatas tio' when said to a friend, they might go 'okej, kio estas tio kiun vi sxatas?', but if you said 'Mi sxatas tiu!' the friend would not need to ask because they already know what you're on about as it has been mentioned or assumed within the conversation?
