You know what, that is great. I live near a fairly large city (Philadelphia), but they don't have a single Esperanto club. So I have never met a single person in real life who speaks it. Still, the online culture is great, and I have only been learning for 2 months.

Hmmm, good idea to use media trends in this way.

I hadn't thought of doing that before, but I like it!

I don't care about the money, so I won't bother keeping track. But this is something people can easily do, even if they only spend a few minutes a day (or whatever) doing it.

Easy, painless, and advertises the language to people who probably have never heard of it before. Very good!

I set up a new account, and sent a bit.ly link to about 15 "bored" people, which only took a couple of minutes. Immediately got six clicks on the link.

Doesn't mean we have six new students, but it does mean we've got six people newly aware (if only marginally) of Esperanto. And they at least now know where to find out more. That's all to the good.

Well, the simple fact that your yelling and screaming at me now SERIOUSLY tells me it's probably a scam. Giving away $1000? Too good to be true.

I think I'll pass, let someone else get the money... I doubt you'll remember in a year.

(Of course the simple fact you metion advertising, bit.ly and money in the same post makes me think you also work for them.)

Well, honestly, it would take a lot of clicks for him to make any money, even if he owned bit.ly.

I once ran a blog with ads on it, and one day it got 10,000 visits. I made four dollars.

Oh, come now. Can't we Assume Good Faith, even if this isn't Wikipedia? (Is random capitalization contagious? okulumo.gif )

He's probably not running a scam, and I could think of tons of posts which could mention advertising, money, and another website and not be a scam.

RiotNrrd (显示个人资料) 2009年8月21日上午4:20:18

Nah - there's no payback for pushing bit.ly clicks. And there's really no discernible scam in telling people on Twitter - people who just publicly admitted to being bored - about Esperanto and pointing them at Lernu. I mean, c'mon. Being vigilant on the net is wise, but these objections are just paranoid.

Not that your helping the 'yelling and screaming' by what you're saying, Maverynthia rideto.gif.

And to pay someone $1000 only requires the account name, BSB and Account Number (or so it goes for me with ANZ). Therefore they can't take money away from you.

And while $1000 is a nice incentive, it's not exactly too good to be true. The Commonwealth of Australia gave me $900 AUD in May for sitting on my bum doing nothing. Google allows you to set up a website for free, put a google adverts box on that website for free, and sends you checks with the profit.

As a mate used to shout out in the middle of highschool classes: "REMAIN CALM!!!!" rido.gif Although it's good to see you've got your wits about you and are remaining wary of the internet!

Anyway back to the topic, I think a marketing campaign directed at English speakers would be great. Not marketing campaign as in Ingsoc style, but more a gentle 'bored? learn esperanto!'

Of course we don't want to go too far and end up with "Evonysperanto - Learn discretely, in private okulumo.gif" rido.gif
(people who don't have ad blockers should know what I'm talking about)
