Not Confusing Spanish and Esperanto

Lately I have been focusing on my spanish more than my esperanto because I'm in Spanish 4. I haven't been learning Esperanto because I started mixing it into my spanish because alot of it is soooo similar.

For example: To be in Spanish is either Estar or Ser. To be in esperanto is Esti. Grande in spanish is 'Big' or 'Great' and Granda in esperanto is 'Big' or 'Great'.

I really want to continue learning Esperanto but I don't want it to screw up my Spanish. How can I learn both languages without confusing them? I'm sure you all have had experience learning two languages at once..

Hmmm, I don't know if there's a fool-proof way here. I've been having the same problem, to some extent. I would focus on Spanish while your courses are ongoing, and in the breaks and holidays pick up Esperanto again. Esperanto doesn't require so much time, luckily.

I think you can solve your problem by praxis. It means it is a natural process. I use in my work and everyday life 4 languages. Changing languages in conversation is like switching the light. I can not better explain it, but it works. Be patient and you realise one day that similiar words in foreign languages do not disturb you. It is even easer to learn seeing similiarity in different languages.

In the past, I learnt Spanish (with English during the same time). I had the same kind of problems (in French problème, in Spanish problema, in esperanto problemo).

It's true that can be annoying. But on the other hand, that help a lot to remember new words. Actually, I thinks that is more helpful than problematic. But you should take care of similarity during your learning. Maybe you can write side to side similar words in the different languages to see clearly witch one belong to which language. Also take special care about false friend. If you do a small misspelling, it's not serious. But from time to time there are words with similar shape and totally (or even opposite) meanings !

For example: eventualmente is not eventually

That's so funny, as I'm in Spanish 2 in High School myself, and Spanish is getting A LOT harder after learning in Esperanto over the summer.

Of course, not gonna keep me from learning either language, but it's funny and a little challenging at the same time rido.gif

Of course, not gonna keep me from learning either language, but it's funny and a little challenging at the same time rido.gif
Or it could just be because Spanish naturally gets harder lango.gif.

I really can't give you any advice. I'm used to learning many different languages so I don't really get them confused. Of course, I'm currently focusing on Japanese, which is nothing like Esperanto ridulo.gif

I think the most counter-productive thing is stressing over confusing vocabulary between different languages. What I do is just take it easy, in some cases I don't even try to absorb vocabulary forcibly. Of course that mightn't work in a school/formal class environment but still, you just treat it like when you find a new crazy English word for the first time - I mean, you don't go writing vocabulary lists and doing flashcards when that happens do you? You just use it a bit, remember to look it up in the dictionary at home, and bob's your uncle okulumo.gif. If you do that with foreign languages it should help stop you from confusing them together.

Esperanto teaches me French and occasionally German words, both of which I learn as well.

It'd be so awesome with at least a scene or two on Youtube in English, but with Esperanto subtitles ridulo.gif
