Films on the manipulation of groups have already been mentioned in earlier posts (2009-11-17 16:44:04).

Another 'chilling experiment' in the modern era occurs in Das Experiment (2001, dir. Oliver Hirschbiegel), a German film (with English subtitles). In short, not to give away the plot, failing to properly supervise and train guards to treat prisoners humanely can lead to situations like Abu Ghraib.

But there's a film of another kind of experiment: introduce non-conformity into a very conformist situation for a benevolent purpose. I refer to Dead Poets Society (1989, dir. Peter Weir) starring Robin Williams, one of my favourites.

If anyone knows more examples, including films not in English but which have English subtitles, by all means mention them!

I love the film, Die Welle, which is avaliable in German with English subtitles. It's about a high school project investigating totalitarism, set in Germany where the students say that something like the Nazi movement could not happen in Germany again, as everyone has learned from that and advanced. The teacher then encourages them to form their own group, and a sort of group mentality slowly builds.
The film takes place over only one week and gets very chilling by the end.

Indeed, when Jürgen Vogel (who played Rainer Wenger) carried the audience in his last speech, he had me thinking that, within the story, a quasi-fascist movement was about to be launched. He is a fine actor.

Die Welle is a remake of the American film "The Wave", with a few plot changes and modifications to fit its setting in Germany, rather than the US.

It sounds like it ends more violently than the US version as well! The US version was an afterschool special, and it would never have ended in a shooting, as the German version did.

The American version has been put in sections on a website connected with the project, so people can see it and compare it with the German version. I thought that the German version was better as a story on film, but the American one has the importance having been based on an actual experiment in Cubberley High School in Palo Alto, California in 1967.

So, what happened Miland ?

The title of this film : "Death to the referee", a crazy deadly run of fans of a loosed football team against the referee of the match.

This looks interesting, but I didn't find it on DVD. Does the French DVD have English subtitles?
