I love languages, but I never seem to get to the point of really being fluent...so if someone who speaks English could help me along, that would be excellent.  Dankon!

Hi
The only way to reach fluency is to use the language. I used Esperanto online and reached a reasonable typing fluency, but I never reached what I would consider to be true fluency until I spent extended periods of time (a week or so) in an Esperanto-speaking environment. This is true with any language, not just Esperanto; you can reach a pretty good proficiency on your own, but you can't really become fluent unless you spend a significant period of time living and breathing your target language. Preferably this should be in an environment where the people you talk to don't speak your native language, so you have no choice of falling back to your native language.

In the meantime, you can find a penpal, use chat programs (the tujmesaĝilo here at lernu is a good resource), participate in online forums, and read, read, read in Esperanto (this will help you build your vocabulary)

I just recently attended my very first meeting of real-life Esperantists, and I do have to say that it felt as though entirely different parts of my brain were being used as I worked very hard to comprehend and express myself.
It was tremendous fun, also, and motivated me to study more than my laziness sometimes allows. rideto.gif
