Seriously though, these people still hold a lot of power in the US, it's downright scary when you encounter it almost daily here in western North Carolina, even in the classes I teach. I had a student want to drop my class because she was afraid of the Devil (I am openly Gay and Pagan, so, double whammy), though I took it as a complement
and we had another student actually file a formal complaint about an Art History class because the teacher (GASP!) showed photos of art that included naughty bits and pieces, you know the hoohaa! And the teacher had the audacity to discuss anything that predated Christianity! The nerve!Fortunately, that student was invited to seek his education elsewhere.
Unfortunately, this sort of attitude is quite common around here. Miland, you were a little surprised to hear something like this going on, but my reaction was more like, “Oh, Another one?!” Don’t get me wrong, there aren’t that many book burnings around here (wow! that phrase just hit me while rereading it), but there is definitely a hostile atmosphere towards anyone who tries to question these types. Generally, they start whining about how Christianity is under attack, blah blah blah.
I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that the US is heavily dominated socially and politically by religious political extremists who are usually of the Protestant persuasion and are very keen on limiting the rights of others.

The Kings James Version is a translation of the Textus Receptus. It basically compounds the errors of translation by being a translation of a translation (of a translation?), while making a few new translation errors in the process. People who are KJV-only, depending on how serious they are, either see only the KJV as correct or all translations from the Textus Receptus as being at least as good as the KJV (The reasoning being something along the lines of the translation errors being divinely inspired and so part of biblical canon). So that means that yes, they might have burned Hebrew originals or French translations.

I'm seeing a lot of hostile caricature in this thread so the more open minded readers here should remember not to take as absolute truth everything they read. For instance, the quote "If English was good enough for Jesus..." is an old put-down and one wonders if the originators of it were aware that Aramaic, Greek and Latin were the languages commonly used that area of the world 2000 years ago and that there was no such thing as "English". They probably did but that didn't stop them from ridiculing those that they disagreed with.
And as for the book-burnings in the SC region, that's a new one on me although I wouldn't be too surprised if it were true. Unfortunately, you find radicals and ignoramuses everywhere -- in churches, in universities and walking the street. Ever hear of the ACLU? You know, those gentle people who never miss a beat at putting down those who believe in the Bible?
