Saluton! I'm just beginning Esperanto.
I've been at it for a week or so.
And I'm having some difficulty hearing the difference between a few of the letters.

I didn't think it would be a big deal, but if I try to type what the voice is spelling, I'm not doing so well.

My main problems are hearing the differences between:
h, ĥ, and o
c and s

Especially the c and s. Is there a difference?

Go easy on me please, and thanks in advance! rideto.gif

Saluton Rika,

s is the same as in English and c sounds like "ts"

treat the h normally ĥ is more rarely used but it's basically h with phlegm. o is like the english o in gO or slOW.

Hx with phlegm is a good comparison, but potentially misleading (and messy! lango.gif). I'd go with the sound that a hard "k" makes, only without the initial "hitting" sound of the tongue against the roof of the mouth. If it helps, imagine doing an 's' or 'f' kind of sound (the one where your lips/teeth/mouth parts aren't actually touching but still making a sound), but in the same place you do a K rideto.gif

If it helps, which it probably wont, "ĥ" sounds pretty close to the Welsh "ch". A little like if you were bringing up phlegm, but without doing so!

h sounds like in the verb to have.

ĥ sounds like when Saint Niclaus is laughing: jo jo jo, happy Christmas rido.gif (more or less).

o sounds like in the word compact.

c sounds ts.

s sounds like sound.

Ĥ or ĥ sounds like the "ch" in the Scottish "loch". Here's an amusing Youtube video.

If you know a little bit Spanish, ĥ is like j in "mujer".

Or like the German "ch" after a, o and u.
