In that case, I suppose I'm fluent in English, and can speak "some" Taiwanese, French, Mandarin, and Spanish.
I've taken German and Japanese classes, and independently studied Turkish, but I wouldn't dare say I speak any of those...

Uvi:As for the proto-languages, I suppose that as we go back in time, we approach the fabled indo-european model more and more?Yeah, pretty much
eikored85:I'm guessing by "some" you mean enough to communicate all basic functions, i.e. able to express wants and needs, handle basic conversations, talk about oneself, find one's way, help strangers in that language, etc.? I'd say that's probably the equivalent of 1-2 years of college study. That's pretty much what I mean by some, but I left it ambiguous because of the nature of languages. But yes, enough to respond to basic topics in the language

Ironchef:I am curious what the 2 votes were for for "fluent in other language". I wonder if we have any "fluent" Celtic/Gaelic speakers in our midst. My good high school friend (who is still in high school, I am not) is fluent is Gaelic. She started studying the language in grade 8. She can speak very well. Her reading and writing is still shaky...but not bad for 5 years. I'm trying to convince her to learn Esperantos with me (as I am just starting).

Actually, while I can read a lot of German, I hadn't used it in over a year, so I could barely write it, but I recently picked it up again, and won't stop until I'm fluent.
I also am definitely going to learn Esperanto to fluency, and expect to be the end of summer.
As for sign languages mentioned, I am really fascinated by them, but don't really like ASL (personal reasons), but when I move to Norway, I might learn some Norsk tegnspråk.

Pharoah:The strangest language of all:I also like it. The funny thing is that Perl was created by a linguist, something that nearly never happens, that a linguist creates a language.
Perl.
One of the slogans of Perl is: "There's more than one way to do it," commonly known as TMTOWTDI.

Let's see:
Fluent in English and French
Not 'fluent' but can still get around quite handily in Russian, German, & Thai.
Jamaican Patois is also in the mix as my wife's Jamaican, but some debate whether that's a language or not.
And of course nia esperanto.
