Greyshades:It just occured to me that since the Olympics an international event with people all over the world, and Esperanto is an international language with speakers all over the world (more are less), the two would make natural allies. Thoughts?Jup, that would be great. Still, English currently pretty much dominates the picture. People pick up what is handy and Esperanto is, in most cases, not. We need to raise awareness of Esperanto both at the athletes and Olimplic officials level. And promote Esperanto during the games themselves.

Rogir:Someone has already started a campaign to promote Esperanto among athletes who will go to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. That'd be a good idea seeming as there are many Esperantists in Brazil.

Of course, this is daydreaming lol
But seriously, I remember hearing that IOC's official languages are English and French. Anybody know how and why that decision was made?

andogigi:I remember hearing that IOC's official languages are English and French. Anybody know how and why that decision was made? The two working languages of the UN Secretariat are English and French, so maybe there's a connection.

Uvi:Something out of this world would be for Esperantio to send its own squadron of athletes and for these athletes to collect a few medals to create awareness about the Esperanto worldLa Loko still did that in the past (youtube).
Of course, this is daydreaming lol
Off topic: La Loko: Kio estas bruliĝo? and la koko aŭ la ovo?

It won't be long though, and I bet we can expect to see Spanish and Chinese joining the ranks of Olympic languages. The problems though are neutrality (Spanish has a good deal of that, Chinese not much so (due to limited speaker range), and maybe competitiveness (I know China are big in the Olympics, but I don't know about Spanish speaking countries unfortunately). So Spanish more likely that Chinese if it has a healthy amount of competitors who speak it (and bring in fans or viewers who speak those languages etc). Esperanto, meh, probably in 100 years time...
