Hi everyone

For those of you on the US East Coast, or those of you who want to travel further, I'd like to invite you to this year's Esperanto-USA national convention. It's being held in Washington, DC, from May 28-31 (that's Memorial Day weekend). This year is the 100th anniversary of L.L. Zamenhof's visit to the USA, where he visited the 6th Universala Kongreso, also held in Washington.

More information is at the convention's website.

Guests of note will include Esther Schor, author of several articles about Esperanto, and Arika Okrent, author of "In the Land of Invented Languages: Esperanto Rock Stars, Klingon Poets, Loglan Lovers and the Mad Dreamers who tried to Build a Perfect Language".

This is a great chance to come and enjoy speaking Esperanto in DC at a beautiful time of year, full of a lot of activities. You're encouraged to bring your family; there will be a lot of holiday activities going on outside of the Esperanto convention.

There will also be an "Esperanto Widows" group, which will spend the weekend doing English-language tourism in DC. It's aimed at spouses or family members of Esperanto speakers, who don't want to hang around being bored by their family member's obsession with some weird fake language. The Convention Committee has noticed that spouses who get dragged along to these things seem to have a very boring time of it, so we are aiming to reverse the trend, and providing the resources to allow attendees to make this into a fun family vacation.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, or else e-mail esperantodc@gmail.com.

Do you know if Ms Okrent will be speaking in English or Esperanto? I can't remember from her book is she is an Esperantist or not.

I asked this on facebook last week, but noone seemed to know.

I heard she was going to speak in English, but I heard a rumor that she was thinking about challenging herself and speaking in Esperanto. So it remains to be seen, I suppose. It may be a surprise.

My understanding is that she is not an Esperantist in the strictest sense of the word, but that she did pick up some basic functional Esperanto over the course of her research. Not fluent by any means, or so I am told. I haven't met her personally.

Some weeks ago trojo did a lernu.net post with a link to a New York Times article which was co-authored by Arika Okrent.

esperanto-usa.org

"...It is clear from the speech of Zamenhof (available here) that he came to the US full of optimism. He viewed the US as a model of his vision for all of humanity, people of diverse races and cultures united by a common language. We will consider the aptness of that parallelism in 1910 and today..."

That's quite interesting. Especially if it comes to that current 23x official EU languages issue.
I didn't know that he traveled to the US. Also I should take some more in deep research about the former bridge language decision process in the US. But I'm beginning to prefer the personal adopted language idea above the bridge language intention. Or let me clarify: The personal adopted language status could be the catagory status before it comes to a bridge language.

There's still time to register for the convention, which will take place in a little less than two weeks.

My inside information says that Arika is planning on giving her talk in Esperanto. Sign up for the convention now, and I'll see you there!

I'd love to come, but first I need to find somewhere to stay (preferably for as little as possible) and make sure I have somewhere to put my car. Any suggestions?

Rooms at the hotel where the convention will be held are available for a convention rate of $142 per night, that includes the tax. You can be matched with a roommate and be paying half that ($71/night). I believe there is a parking garage attached to the hotel. It isn't in an area with abundant parking.

Contact esperantodc@gmail.com for information on that.

Some of us local esperantists have volunteered to take in guests for the duration of the convention, for students and others who can't afford the lodging. I volunteered to take a couple, but I don't know if I have been assigned anyone or not. Let me contact the organizer and get back to you privately about that - if not me, then someone else might be able to accept you. Otherwise, I can help you find a cheaper hotel in the region.

Anyone else who would like to come to this convention, but finds hotel expense to be a difficulty, please contact me privately and I'll help you find something that works for you.
