Yep, it would be written as 'osu' ('ossu'?), but I've heard it said to me plenty of times and I never hear the final 'u'. In speech it's dropped, as ceigered mentioned. I believe its origin is a greeting two sparrers give to each other, for example in a judo match, but its use has spread far outside the ring.

Ah, I see. Thanks for that explanation. So probably that's what the referee says i.e. here at the beginning (and making that "arm air cut pointer"). Like Ek! or Start! (or "Los!" or "Auf gehts!" in German). So it spreaded as a kind of ŝerca greeting outside the ring. rideto.gif
