1. Ekzistinta kaj de longe ne plu ekzistanta: - Having existed and existing no more since a long time ago.
"Ni ĉiuj aŭskultis legendojn pri la antikvaj tempoj." - We (have) all listened to legends about the ancient times.
"Demeti de si la antikvan Adamon (plibonigi la konduton)." - To shed from oneself the ancient Adam (to improve one's behaviour)
"Dionizo estis unu el la dioj, je kiuj kredis antikvuloj." - Dionysos was one of the gods which the ancients believed in.
2. Tro malnova, malmoderna: - Too old, old-fashioned
"Tiu modo estas antikva." - That fashion is [very] out-dated (or ancient!).
- The antique collector wants to to buy this vase from me.
- I will collect money to buy that ring from an antique dealer. (Note: 'to save money' = 'sxpari monon')
- The antiquity of that painting is certified by scientists.

I do believe "kolekti" here is in the generic, non-complicated-by-insurance-company-and-church-tithe-jargon sense of just getting money. The distinction in English is more or less bureaucratic isn't it?
(It's not so much a US thing anyway, here, collecting money could mean getting money from home to buy something, or going to an ATM/Bank. A collection (monetarily) is normally something a church or charity has, and while I don't think they still exist, tax-collectors are yet another specialised use of "collect-"). I assume this is similar to the US examples you gave?
I think the reason these stigma exist so strongly though is because we grow up as children associating "collect-" to various different sources as opposed to an actual definition, where as in EO it's not quite like that, because words are a lot more "innocent" in their definitions, and haven't necessarily had new meanings ingrained into them over 500 years or so).

ceigered:I like that expression: "words are a lot more "innocent" in their definitions". Probably words are placeholder for personaly storaged experiences. Unfortunately, nobody has the same pool of experiences like another one. So even if somebody use the same word s/he can point to something different. Also, even if they get it figured out how to clone somebody this clone will make individual experiences. So this "innocence" will persists. In my opinion.

Ŝiru_Ĉi_Tie:I wasn't saying the use of kolekti was wrong, just the translation of it had a connotation that probably wasn't meant.Ah sorry, I agree (well, actually I'm sort of neutral, but I didn't think you were wrong, I think i just go writing and ended up babbling on about stuff without thinking )
