Thanks to the world of advertising, I've started to see advertisements for Esperanto (well, more or less), via Facebook. Considering I haven't really said anything about Esperanto on my profile page, but just languages in general, it's likely the advertisement shows up on people who like language's facebook pages, so hopefully this means more people will be getting interested! rideto.gif

(on the flipside, this could also make people see the word "esperanto", see the green flag with the star, and then go "some sort of spanish speaking banana republic advertising for immigrants?")

I'd like to go to Esperanto but I ran out of spesmiloj. lango.gif

All the green and white rectangles I've been seeing on TV the last few days, and talk of the 'world game,' and thousands of people from all around the world in the same place with something they love in common, made me think that it might be a good idea for an ad to link the two, maybe like this:

When I was first started researching languages to learn, I came across Esperanto and assumed instantly that it was just another variant of Spanish. I then moved onto Interlingua however I quickly decided I didn’t like its structure. I then decided to go back and give Esperanto another look (This was mainly because Wikipeida mentioned it had native speakers - the only designed language I know of) I then realised I had been a tool and decided I'd try and conquer it after all.

I wonder how many others people made the same mistake and just passed Esperanto on.

Speaking of dialects of spanish, I think it was my interest in those sort of border-languages in Europe, or the minority romance languages (e.g. Galician, Romansch, etc), and the way Romance languages have spread out that got me interested in these interlanguages like EO and Lingua Franca Nova. It's very interesting to see how there can be so many different romance languages, but they're all very similar.

with the right people, I can imagine that ad really working. The problem with advertising whenever the world cup's on though is that the advertising price is through the roof, so there'd have to be substantial backing from somewhere.

Ah that's right. After looking at that page, did you see by any chance a link down the bottom referring to "mono" (a current EO currency?) I wonder what'd be like to take those notes into the exchange rido.gif

I remember seeing TV advertising a couple of years ago for some clothing company and in the news they said "TV commercial uses Esperanto" and then was horribly disappointed to learn that the language the people in the commercial were speaking was not Esperanto but some made up gibberish of words.

That is the problem. People just think that Esperanto is some made up mess of words that is a big joke and not to be taken seriously. As soon as someone does and the public realise it's not just a game (though to be fair, it can be fun), then Esperanto will get some fair recognition.

I gotta say that Esperanto isn't the most convincing name for people to say, "Hey that looks cool, I wanna do that!"

However, I live in California (USA) and a large percentage of the population is Hispanic >_> You'd probably get a different response in New England.
