Lunombrulino:Dave - There wasn't any activity planned for widow/widowers until now, but it's a great idea! I'm the one in charge of planning excursions and such for the event. I will propose this to the group and see if it flies.
It was done very informally for our congress, with almost no prior planning involved. The non-esperantist wife of one of our organizers agreed to be the official point of contact for the 'Esperanto widow(er)s'. We got all of the spouses together and they agreed on what they wanted to do, with a date and time. We assumed that the spouses would want to do certain parts of the official program (banquet, distra vespero). The spouse's excursion ended up being on a day when there weren't any other excursions, it was a day full of lectures etc. So you could really go with something relatively unstructured like ours, or else add more structure. Realistically, the Esperanto 'widows' are most likely to be women, given the demographics of the US Esperanto community. I don't recall ever having seen a boyfriend or husband dragged to an Esperanto event - it was always a wife or girlfriend.

PaulExcoff:DAMNE! I live right by San Francisco, but starting next month I'm going to college in Maine, and my summer vacation doesn't start until June 6th... just my luck.
As a consolation prize, can I tempt you with the Aŭtuna Renkontiĝo Esperantista (ARE) in Silver Bay, New York? It's about 50 people from the Canada and the Northeast US in a beautiful YMCA camp. There's a big contingent of young people and it's a lot of fun. It's held over Columbus Day weekend every year.

You'll want to hook up with the other Esperantists in Maine and in New England.

Hey Patrik, Well, I have only read your original post. It's pretty late at night so I only skimmed through the post. I should read it in more detail some other time. Haha! But I totally agree with you. We need to stop speaking about Esperanto and actually do something with it. Recently I had the sudden inspiration that sometime I would like to see whether business dealings can be done in Esperanto. So when I have some time, I'm gonna do some research about business, economics, finances etc. then write some stuff in Esperanto about running businesses, important words and vocabulary to do with businesses... of course, all in Esperanto. I can see Esperanto businesses being a possibility in the future but it all starts with someone ordinary. We need to be very enthusiastic and fervent about our Esperantisteco (Esperanto-ness ridego.gif Haha) and do something with it.

About the Fina Venko, I don't see it happening any time soon but I don't believe it is impossible. As weird a concept as this may be to wrap one's head around, I think it's possible someday. But it'll take a lot of work by all Esperantists, beginnners and advanced. It's a goal even if we don't think it'll happen sometime soon, ey?

These are my views at the present time. If I think of anything else important to say soon or if I notice more things in this thread that I have something to say about, I'll write back! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. It's good to know that someone sees where we are at the moment.

patrik:
Oh, well, I have had read of nasty accusations regarding Dr. Dasgupta (the current UEA president) and the newly-elected Academians. But I don't care about the mudslinging. I'd rather read about the Respubliko. lango.gif
What have they said about him? I guess I need to read more frequently about the Akademio and the UEA.

I personally know of only one non-esperantist husband of a wife esperantist, and I've never met him.

My own wife tried very hard to learn Esperanto, but it just didn't ring her chimes, and she feels guilty that she can't share it with me. Of course, that makes me feel guilty that she tried so hard, and you know how that cycle goes.

Oooh, looks interesting. If I can get a way to transport myself I may attend, and drag along my Croatian esperantist classmate. (It's really surprising that there are two Esperantists in a freshman class of 91 people, I guess my school is a magnet for the exceedingly idealistic.) If not this year, I'll get around to it one of my four years on the east coast.

Contact Karen Klahr, you can probably ride with her. Or else if you can get yourself to Boston, you can probably travel with the Boston group, but I think that'll be out of your way.

It did encounter to me that many member of local online communities are not interested to meet offline. So, yes, Facebook groops are increasing, but, it's nearly free, isn't? Means somebody only is paying with its privacy (profile activity data) okulumo.gif

@Miland and Erinja: Thanks for the posts and the article! I've enjoyed reading about your experiences, most especially about Miland's ILEI exam. shoko.gif

@dukemasuya: Thanks for appreciating my posts. rideto.gif Doing business in Esperanto is not a new idea. (Beaufront raised that issue since the early days, and some are doing it in the Internet, if I'm right.) As for the possibility of the Fina Venko, I think that indeed, it's not possible within our lifetime, and it does take lots of work. But I have this second thoughts as to is it worth doing. There are thoughts like "What good will it be for Esperanto if it gains the whole world, yet loses its ideals?" That's selfish, I guess.

@Paul: That's nice, having an Esperantist classmate! rideto.gif Regarding your experience, it's good to know that many are still enthusiastic about idealistic goals. At least, there is hope. Good luck! okulumo.gif
