Question: why is nobleman (nobelo) and noble (nobla) written this way? Wouldn't it be more lgical for nobleman to be virnoblo, noblino or genoblo? Why don't the words use the same root

Demando: kial estas nobelo (nobleman) kaj nobla (noble) skribas per tiuj vortoj? Mi pensas ke ĝi estus pli logika por nobelo uzi (virnoblon, noblinon aŭ genoblon)? Kial la vorto ne uzas la saman etimon? Mi volas kukon =)

They don't use the same root because they aren't derived from each other.

ReVo definition for nobla: "Havanta altajn kaj malvulgarajn moralajn kvalitojn, senriproĉe justa, brava, honesta kaj malegoisma"
ReVo definition for nobelo: "Homo, kiu pro familia deveno aŭ pro favoro de regnestro ricevis apartajn privilegiojn kaj almenaŭ honoran titolon, kiu distingigas lin de ceteraj regnanoj"

Guess it’s my English kicking in, I always associated being noble as having the quantities of a nobleman.

I would have thought that "nobleman" would be "noblulo" - but like many things in EO, if a derived term is unrelated in meaning to the original term, they'll be turned into separated roots, and this is the case for nobleman/noble:

nobleman: aristocrat.
noble: honourable, free from bad qualities in character, morally reputable and respectable.

So likely Zam went "well, in this utopian age of democracy and socialism, are noblemen actually noble? Mmm.. nup!" and thus separated the roots to prevent a Sapir-Whorf style confusion. As for why we say nobleman when a nobleman is not necessarily noble, I'm guessing those loyal subjects back in the days of feudalism were mostly pugokisantoj.

It's all well and good because Robinhood would be criminalised morally if he robbed from nobluloj instead of nobeloj!

(EDIT: sorry darkweasel didn't see your post)

Personally, I'm not 100% aware of the meaning of these two English words. I recommend to look at the Esperanto definitions instead of trying to translate too much into English, you're on the safe side that way.
