I look forward to when I need help with such things, I am still having problems remembering to place the n at the end of the object word in a sentence! By the way, this is a bit of an unusual request, but does anyone know what the word for ferret is? I have one, and I'd love to be able to talk about her once my Esperanto improves.

I know what you mean about the n ending. When you begin learning, you'll often forget to use it at times and other times you'll use it when you shouldn't. Those mistakes become less frequent as you progress. You develop an instinctive feel for when the word is an object and when it's not:

Tiu besto estas mia furo. / Ĉu vi ŝatas mian furon?

Mustelvulpo:

Tiu besto estas mia furo. / Ĉu vi ŝatas mian furon?
Jes sed mi akcidente manĝis vian furon.... senkulpa.gif

(beginners should be able to figure that one out okulumo.gif)

EDIT: Sorry, the iPhone auto-correct decided to take matters into its own hands.

If I understood that sentence correctly...ewwwww, too stringy! ridulo.gif

Lynchie:whether anyone gets despondent when you mention that you are learning Esperanto and you are met with derision, incredulity and confusion as to what Esperanto actually is?
The general notion that I'm intellectually inclined to learn other languages seems like an (yet another) excentricity of mine to most people in my surroundings, and this despite the fact that (as immigrants), our economic success hangs on the balance of our ability to master (at the very least) the local language. I refer here to my extended family (aunts and uncles, etc.).

On the other hand, my parents have always been supportive of my appetite for learning languages, and for learning in general, and have always taken pride in the fact that I'm very talented in that area. In this context, Esperanto becomes "another intellectual adventure" in their mind, which is what it actually is for me as well.

Personally, I don't actively share my inclination for Esperanto, except with my wife, who is also learning it.

For most people, money is the name of the game, and being that I'm perceived in my social circle as being more succesful than most, their logical conclusion is to believe that, despite my "excentricities", I HAVE to be doing something right that they aren't, which shields me from the most part of criticism, linguistic or otherwise.

But in essence, I just focus on doing the things that make me a genuinely happy person. Learning and communicating in Esperanto with other esperantists is one of them.

I think you are very lucky to have such wonderful support from your friends and family. The first thing my dad said when he found out I was studying Esperanto was "you will give it up in a couple of weeks"...one week has almost passed and I am still going strong and enjoying it very much ridulo.gif
