Evildela:it looks like what the gnomes out of world of warcraft use for everything. Kind like it ^.^That'd be it (well, that's assuming said gnomes are the same as the were in WC3, I haven't played any blizzard games later than that). Actually, I think most sci-fi fantasy tends to have steampunk themes somewhere, especially some Japanese examples like Final Fantasy, even Full Metal Alchemist has some minor steampunkish things in it in the sense of steam trains
. They are arguably extremely diluted examples though, I'm just trying to think common pop-culture examples that delve in that direction..

- Exotic oriental man with mystic ancient powers combined with the best technology.
- Communist industrialist. Lots of symbolism in their technology.
I think you could do much with this unique theme.

The Japanese manga and anime "Gintama" is an example of future technology in 1800's (actually, late 1800's I suspect) Japan, and thus an east asian example (because, let's face it, a lot of Japanese building styles and technology are part of a larger, heavily chinese-influenced culture area
). As it goes on, it slowly turns into just modern Japan in some ways, with the occaisional television set with a roof like a traditional Japanese house there to remind people this is set in the past . But things like their space ships, being classic oriental in design but having a rocket thing on the rear-end are one way one could look at a "steampunkish" East Asia.

In Chinese terms, we're talking late Qing dynasty. You'd have Chinese people adopting new technologies invented in the West, and also struggles between Chinese people and Westerners determined to expand their spheres of influence in China. In Taiwan, the Victorian era would have seen massive numbers of Han immigrants coming to Taiwan (run by the Qing dynasty at the time), until the very late Victorian era, when the Japanese invasion of Taiwan took place.
A busy time in history, in all parts of the world!

There have been debates at the Steampunk Empire about how important the term 'Victorian' is, given that the term is more relevant to former members of the British Empire. Most people seemed to agree that 'Victorian' wasn't appropriate for most countries, but 'Victorian Era' was fine. I'm not sure about the best site for steampunk short stories. I'll do a bit of research and get back to you on that.

Thanks a lot! That starts my imagination! It's now running wild! Yeah, that period has been quite busy around China/Taiwan. Lots going on. On the stages are traditional official, Taiping theocrat, revolutionary, Japanese invader, and so many more!

Now you bring it up, Gintama's world is a Japan which the Aliens suddenly broke into and brought all the technologies to. Otherwise they probably would never easily that level of technology~ Somehow it's quite analogous to what Perry did.

I really love that site! Thank you for telling me it! I like how the blog is dedicated to Multicultural Steampunk, which is a world view Esperanto would fit in perfectly!
