sudanglo:There is a certain propaganda/recruitment value in having a good proportion of presentable/easy on the eye E. speakers.
As a public relations professional, I'm with you 300% on this, for both genders. rideto.gif

Putting an Esperantist equivalent of Catherine Zeta-Jones and George Clooney, or Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift (for the younger generation) could have a measurable positive impact on any Esperanto promotional campaign/effort.

At the very least, attractive Esperantists would be useful vehicles to reposition Esperanto as a modern, cool, and sophisticated language in the crowded language "marketplace"/mind scape.

JEB meeting

When I read the quote on that photo it makes me laugh. Lucky I'd already in Europe seen things are bigger and met Esperanto speakers. Otherwise I'd never have learnt the language. Sit in a church garden at the national congress- no thanks!

All other social movements I've been in are much bigger than Esperanto. It's not glamour, it's just size. I didn't learn the language to screw, but I do want to use it. You go to Linux conferences and the things are massive; everyone is active and has new things to show. Anarchist riots regularly number hundreds. My local astronomy club even has a few dozen members of various ages. Every meeting people bring in photos of their shoots, do talks- they've even self built & funding their own big sited telescope!

Why aren't Esperantists doing fuck all? I search youtube and it's like the world is dead out there. A couple of guys saying hello to the camera and a few music clips set to slideshows of furry cats. I myself am planning a documentary in Esperanto and waiting to pay off debts & schooling so I can then buy the recording equipment.

How easy it is the do voice overs for films. You even have scripts (subtitles) on filmoj! Not much original content is being made in Esperanto. We're not in the 60's where making films, games and music is expensive; all of the equipment to make professional calibre works is cheap!

My conclusion is that Esperanto speakers have nothing to talk about. Nothing to talk about, and the movement looks passive.

Make some noise!

Well I don't know about you, but I've found plenty of you tube videos in which are used. Obviously not every you tube film in Esperanto has Esperanto in the title.

Gegjix, I think it has been made clear that the language in these forums is to be kept clean. Please stop abusing the rules of the website. You seem like an intelligent person, you should be able to use a more intelligent vocabulary.

Thanks.

Glad you made the point that you did UVI.

Until such time when we have massive numbers, one needs to give the world at large a reason for learning Esperanto, and making it a cool thing to do through glamourous figure-heads would certainly have an effect.

The other side of the coin, so to speak, is that someone might out of intellectual interest start to learn Esperanto and then be unfortunate in the choice of their first congress, and finding that so many participants were, how shall I put it, not exactly coming from the mainstream of society, then be totally turned off.

I note your comments Genjix.

I also agree with the general thrust of what you said in relation to the activeness of the movement, though some individuals have made startling contributions on the more academic side.

It is sadly the case that a lot of loyal Esperantists are too inward-looking and content with cosy atmosphere of the E. community. And, of course, our numbers are small.

However with regard to the specific point about U-tube videos, my own reaction has been one of surprise as to how many postings in or about Esperanto there are.

'Prestiĝo' won't do for 'glamour' Ceiger, the two concepts are too far apart. But interesting about the etymology.

I think perhaps a neologism is called for here. Perhaps 'glamuro/a'. 'Sorĉa ĉarmo' is not quite it, nor 'steluleco'.

Genjix:Why aren't Esperantists doing :::: all?
You're not going to shock any adults, but small kids could be reading our forum. So please edit your message accordingly.

Well, I understand what you point to. You're keen of pushing some contemporary e-o culture. Please stay on track. okulumo.gif

How big are the movements that you know, for people learning any second language as a hobby? To be an Esperantist takes a serious commitment of effort, which most people won't make (till the Fina Venko, of course). You can start practising amateur astronomy straight away with a pair of binoculars and a good book or two, and there's a big network of both amateurs and professionals out there. To be persuaded to join an anarchist riot, I imagine you only have to be discontented and also drunk or stupid (any two of the three should do nicely). You don't have to spend hundreds of hours learning a language.

Whatever the propriety of Genjix's expression, I would be very surprised if small kids are in fact reading these forums, Miland. Let's not be too prissy.

Actually, I am hard pushed to find an alternative expression in English with the same force. And as to translating it into E., well ... la esperantistoj estas sentaŭgaj nenifarantoj .. hmm.
