I apologise Genjix, I did not add to the end of my message that it was mostly in jest, so don't take it seriously.

That said, while you might not learn Esperanto because of eye candy, having eye candy doesn't necessarily detract from the propaganda effect - by eye candy, I don't mean bimbos or tasteless "glamour", but rather just making EO more attractive to learn for those who see attractive people their own age and find it more comfortable to be part of EO.

After all, some people are shallow like that and sometimes it's hard to get their attention unless you make them feel comfortable with people they perceive as being cool or attractive or friendly - I mean, that sort of advertising works for Coca Cola, Apple, nightclubs and the insidious like (rido.gif mi nur ŝercas!), so it likely wouldn't hurt EO groups. I mean, if Adelaide had hip young people my age being the main demographic in the EO group here, I'd be a lot more likely to go than if there weren't. Of course, that requires me to want to go out of my way to Adelaide to meet a whole bunch of people I'm not familiar with, but you probably get the idea.

Of course, to have a full force approach based on nothing but sex appeal would be stupid. But regard for a moment Livemocha - I don't know if they have any promotional pictures on the main page, but normally it has pictures of young men and women in their 20's, clean shaven, very nicely dressed, and after looking at all the nice photography of beaming people huddled around in a group arms around each other like they're great friends out on a journey, it's sort of like "Well, these people all look normal and friendly and popular, so EO can't be bad". I've no qualms manipulating people's subconsciouses like that.

This thread is mainly a joke, as I think most people understand. But just to be realistic, and I hate to say this, people no matter what age or gender ect.. go for sex appeal. why do you think advertising companies use pretty woman or buff men to sell you everything from shampoo to cars. So imagine if some super star openly supported Esperanto - This would give plenty of face time to Esperanto. Alot of people would at least give it a look, sure alot wouldn't bother with it, but at least it would get face time.

How do you think scientology has survived all time time? One of its first moves was to secure influential people. Now to deny otherwise is just ... well immature.

Most of the Esperanto I've seen in the news, are either jokes or cult references. So can we really do any worse then we are now?

Genjix:
Young =/= cool. This video is uninspired, childish and makes Esperanto look very uncool. Conversely here's a video done well which makes Esperantanoj look like a bunch of cool guys and not fringe weirdos ridulo.gif
A new cool e-o bigbang focused at the youth would be nice. But how to trigger that?

I will try to make a karaokeo video proposal for the next JES rekontiĝo. It's also a test. If it works well I can send this kind of "show proposal" to that www.thefestival.eu organisator.

01. Alternative words of Mojosa will appear and disappear. Maybe I get it organized that some e-o uloj of the crowd will speak it countdown-like aloud accross the mass.

02. Mojosu! poem will be spoken live by someone.

03. La_Pafklik_La_Espero_Silvestro_Track_16.mp3

04. Nova kanto sing by someone. I slightly dislike the the refrain. Sounds some bumpy.

05. Amokanto sing by someone

06. Junaj Idealistoj ( I still will made a more instrumental one)

That's my playlist-show idea. But I can only use the very limited video manipulating features of Karafun karaokeo editor. But I'm capable to export it to i.e. *.wmv video files.

Well, I think it's still better than having scientology's reputation. rido.gif

Hey, I'm sure William Shatner could still pull a few ladies into the EO movement rido.gif.

@Genjix:

"your argument not sense much make. Plenty of common themes exist like peace and culture-love. [...] Those are typical examples of common themes (others can include vegetarianism, leftism, ...)

While I agree that common themes exist, I disagree with your over-generalization and assumption that there are "typical examples" of what esperantists are (or should be): you fool yourself if you believe that most esperantists, by default, embrace pacifism, vegetarianism, and/or leftist ideology. Far from me the intention to judge, but kind of assumption is somewhat naïve. I personally do not embrace any of those ideas, yet Esperanto fulfills in me a deep personal interest. Esperantists are as diverse as the people within any other language community would be: with common traits but, nevertheless, different personalities, tastes, lifestyles, and values.

Among countless other things, what makes Esperantujo dynamic and interesting is the possibility to talk about all these differences in a language that provides a relative equality in terms of possibilities of expression: some of us debate political economics issues in Esperanto, others flirt in Esperanto, and any conversational topic in between and around these is perfectly valid.

"I think many of you are coloured by your brainwashing from mass media and believe everyone (and those who would engage Esperanto) actually worships talentless pop-idols, although I have no grudge against media stars (some who have worked very hard). […]"

For one, the notion of talent is relative. After all, J.R.R. Tolkien was unable to digest Shakespeare. Secondly, the idea of using attractive figureheads for an Esperanto awareness campaign does not necessarily imply the use of pop-idols or “bimbos". This is a gross exaggeration, largely because your definition of sex-appeal is misconstrued. One of my clients is a co-publisher of J.K. Rowling in North America. I can't go into detail, but I can tell you that market research reveals that Ms. Rowling is perceived as highly attractive by an impressive proportion of the male reading population aged 35-50. I doubt that she would classify as a "bimbo" in any sense of the term.

You can't ignore the fact (even if it's not an absolute one) that millions of people choose their music based on its capacity to take them elsewhere (whether emotionally or geographically), not on the complexity of the music sheet. CEO’s hire their staff more on personal gut feeling than on rock-solid credentials. And some people fear cats. All these are emotional reactions and attitudes. Rather than fight it, and even if some people DO make rational choices, the overwhelming mass of people who choose with their gut cannot be ignored in a sensible awareness campaign for Esperanto and, therefore, the use of symbols perceived to be attractive (among which human symbols) can't be ignored. We simply need to target our message differently to different audiences.

Genjix:
I myself am planning a documentary in Esperanto and waiting to pay off debts & schooling so I can then buy the recording equipment.

How easy it is the do voice overs for films. You even have scripts (subtitles) on filmoj! Not much original content is being made in Esperanto. We're not in the 60's where making films, games and music is expensive; all of the equipment to make professional calibre works is cheap!

Make some noise!

@Genjix: Are you interested to make a proper video sequence (1024x768px avi, Karafun only accept this sort of file for background video) for that 18 seconds La_Pafklik_La_Espero_Silvestro_Track_16.mp3 ? It's a kind of joke regarding the old-fashion non-popular/malmojosa La Espero hymn and should point to the following Nova kanto song, which is quite popular at e-o youth renkontiĝon.

That would be great. rideto.gif
