From time to time one sees posts about the pronunciation of Esperanto.

At edukado.net you can listen to specimens of the listening parts of examinations.

I have just listened to one and found the pronunciation of the speaker very clear and largely international

This is the link. You can choose your level.

You might have to register with the site - I have already registered and can't test the link without prior registration. But the link might work without it.

EDIT: have corrected the link.

Looks like registration is a go okulumo.gif I'll try it when I'm free-er.

If there is one model Esperanto speaker I could ever name, that would be Dr. Ivo Lapenna. Certainly one of our best orators, and he authored a great book on rhetoric in Esperanto. Here are his speeches. Enjoy~! okulumo.gif

Thank you for the mentioning Ivo Lapenna and for the link.

Unfortunately the sound quality is not great in those videos, at least the ones I listened to now and previously on YouTube. It always sounds like he's giving his speech in a bathroom. Or, if it's outside, there's a lot of ambient noise.

This one isn't too bad even with the ambient outside noise.

However, this speech has murky (unclear) sound and lots of echo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfvOboEetBs&featu...

This one is also murky with lots of echo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVTgp7BLnGk

And this building gives Lapenna's speech lots of noise and a huge echo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytCiPfMnGFo But that same building would be great for Gregorian Chants rido.gif

Maybe someday, somebody with the skills will 'clean them up" by removing the interfering noise. That would be a great service to all present and future Esperantists. Or maybe that's already been done but finding it just takes more net searching than I've done.

Maybe in a few months, when my Esperanto is better and I'm ready for it, I'll look for better quality recordings of Lapenna in mp3/wma/ogg format to listen to and try to imitate.

Sorry folks. Have corrected the link in my initial post. Here it is again. This link to get to the KER specimens.

Without doubt, Professor Lapenna was a brilliant public speaker. However because of the sound quality and the speed, perhaps a bit tough to listen to for a beginner.

The lowest level KER exam specimens provide an easier listening task for the tyro.

But for phrasing and rhythms of speech, try Lapenna.

Sudanglo, thank you for providing the working link. It does sound like a good, clear pronunciation model. I bookmarked it and will use it to improve my Esperanto ability.

Now the link's working I'm rather impressed with how clear that is - it reminds me of Esperanto spoken by Chinese speakers somehow.

Slightly offtopic, I noticed the word "novtipa" - whats a good English translation for this, since "newtype" to me is a thing from the Japanese animation Gundam describing people who are humans adjusted to living in space. Unless these are indeed to do with examinations for newtypes lango.gif.

Ceiger, I would guess that the speaker is Polish. But, yes, the phrasing has something reminiscent of a good Chinese speaker of Esperanto.

What was the context for novtipa? Should just mean 'of a new type'.

La novtipaj poŝ-telefonoj estas multe pli kapablaj ol la simplaj telefonoj de antaŭ 10 jaroj.

"En januaro 2009 aperis detala gvidlibro pri la novtipa ekzamensistemo, en kiu vi povas legi ĉion pri la ekzameno, pri la postuloj, kaj povas trovi du seriojn de specimenoj kaj pri la skribaj kaj pri la buŝaj ekzamenoj je ĉiuj tri niveloj."

That was where "novtipa" was located.

So, that I'm guessing translates to:

"In January 2009, there appeared a detailed guidebook about the new type of examination system, in which you can read all about the examination, about the requirements, and can find two series of specimens and about the writing and about the spoken examination at all 3 levels"

"Novtipa" must have tripped me up due to the way the nominal focus was on "ekzamensistemo", where as in English we have "type" being the focus of all the modifiers. Also, I like Gundam a lot, and Gundam mentions those newtypes alot, so my head automatically switched into anime-fanmode.
