Esperanto Speaking Town

Has there ever been an attempt for Esperantists to populate a town or make one of their own? It would be nice to travel somewhere and be able to walk down a street only hearing Esperanto and reading sign shops and advertisements in Esperanto.

The nearest thing may be the German town Herzberg which has an Esperanto cultural centre

Instantly it came to my mind: Auroville in India. Of course they speak mainly English or French over there. But this visionary city as model for the future world culture really ought choose EO for its communication. This is the place for a great language experiment.

I found two. One of them is the user "Esperantourbo"

Mi trovis du uzantojn. Unu de la du estas la uzanto "Esperantourbo"

(and of course there are at least a few esperantospeaker. Kompreneble tie estas almenaux kelkaj Esperanto-parolantoj)

The BBC comedy show "Red Dwarf" used Esperanto on board the space ship as a kind of "international-space-language-of-the-future". The signs on the ship were in EO/ENG and one of the main characters even tries to learn Esperanto (badly). It was partly making fun of Esperanto but it was also the first time most people on British TV ever got to see it being used. Was quite interesting.

Twould be indeed! I must admit Volapuk does seem a lot more like a national language than Esperanto due to the different sound sets, almost Turkic in a way... Then again, Esperanto doesn't exactly encourage CVCCVC minimalistic structure so it flows a bit slower.

I always thought the butt of the joke was less EO and more the main character (apparently the last 'normal' human, and he can't learn Esperanto? I haven't seen enough though) rido.gif

Why not contact the secretary of the twining esperanto town, Mr Wu.

He is the secretary for the committee,he should know which town has more esperanto speakers. Of course, it is not possible to have the esperanto flowing through the town the whole day. At least, it is convienece to enter a shop without communication difficulties.

Esperanto will not replace the mother tongue.
