Perhaps it is worth commenting that there is a strong psychological effect on ones perception that arises from familiarity.

When first encountered, a particular compound word in Esperanto (which happens to have a long established usage with a specific meaning) might seem strange, or not quite right.

But when one is more familiar with the language one tends to see the compound as one lexical item.

In any case, what makes Esperanto a language and not a code is the social consensus among speakers as to meaning.

The basic mechanism of the language is the combination of roots in a sufficent but not excessive manner to convey meaning. This applies to roots+finaĵo as well as to more lexical kunmetaĵoj.

If a particular compund word is well established it means that in practice the Esperantists have found no particular difficulty in using that compound for that meaning. Compound words that don't stand the test of time (lead to misunderstanding in practice) are dropped.

Again, commenting more generally, the issue of whether a compound is 'logical', and what is established usage, is at the heart of quite a few of the dicussions here at Lernu (subtitoloj versus subtekstoj would be a recent example).

One of the things that distinguishes Esperanto from the other national languages is the tension between 'logicality' and tradition among the speakers.

It would be quite rare in the national languages for an established form to be questioned or overturned on the basis that it doesn't make sense. 'Illogical', but well used forms, can persist in national languages for very long periods of time.

Speaking of interesting compounds, I was looking at the announcement for the Literary Symposium in Louisville KY, and I noticed the word TEMPOGAMO used. I must admit, that was a new one for me, and it took me a few seconds to decode. For one thing, GAMO can mean "gamut" or a musical scale. The general idea is an ordered series of something. The Conference Web Site translates it as "Duration", but I suppose "time frame" might be a more colloquial translation.

Now that I've seen it, I'm sure I'll end up using it!
