Someone of Andy Rooney's influence should be better informed before making comments about language use for the world community. Does he know that though English is widely used, only 5% of the world's population speaks English as its first language and this has declined from 10% in 1945.
I'm glad that he at least mentioned Esperanto, but when he listed the places where it is used, he missed China. Although the Chinese government now requires its young people to learn English, the government supports broadcasts and publications which use Esperanto. The fact that Chinese can learn to read English but do much better at speaking and writing Esperanto. Esperanto is a better choice as a language for the world because it gives a better chance to everyone to participate in the conversation and does not replace the national languages.

Slightly offtopic, I just noticed that Esperanto is rendered as "world language" in Chinese (世界语, shèjièyǔ), perhaps that has a bit of a Sapir-Whorf effect, since, admittedly, Esperanto sounds more like some body mind and soul cult than "International Language" does

What does vocabulary size have to do with eligibility for world language? English has so many words because we have Germanic and Latin roots.

Technically there's the idea that having both allows some sort of mutual intelligibility with latin-based languages (unemployment), and the other one is mutually intelligible with the germanic languages although I suspect we keep the other around simply because it's closer to the roots of the language.

However, such a characteristic requires the English speaker to choose the right words with the right people of the right backgrounds. That unfortunately requires the speaker to realise which words come from which linguistic background, and in the end, that feature of the language is about as useful as if we taught anglo-saxon English and Frenchy English as if they were two separate languages...

I was an intelligent child with a large vocabulary.
Other children physically attacked me at least once a week until I learned not to use it. I learned that in order to keep the number of scars on my arms to a minimum, I had to "dumb my language" down. Those stupid, violent, vocabulary hating children had sharp fingernails.

If English had a smaller vocabulary, I might have enjoyed school a lot more. Therefore, English is out as an international language. Nobody who speaks Esperanto has ever tried to assault me.

One Chinese Esperanto speaker once told me that it is a problem that Esperanto's name is "world language" in Chinese, because when he talks about it, people think that he is talking about English (which is called a "world language" all over the world!). For that reason he personally preferred the old name, but I think perhaps it is a bit late to change the name.
