Anyone know offhand if NASK is doing the usual three week immersion programme this year?

Murphy's Law applies - just found it.

Are you associated with the website bagateloj? Are you going?

I am still looking at my schedule... May not have time to go, even though it's the closest I've been to it. ploro.gif

I really encourage you to go if you can make it. It is truly worth the effort and time.

No, unfortunately I won't be going now. I had heard it lasts three weeks, but this year is only a week or eight days. I couldn't justify crossing the Atlantic for a week. I'm thinking of trying to get three weeks out of the UK plus antaux K and post K, instead.

I'd still rather have four weeks somewhere instead, but can't find anywhere. It might be the last long holiday I get too, for years to come. ploro.gif

NASK had to go to a shorter format because enrollment was simply too low with the old format. Most Americans can't afford to take three weeks off to do a course. The new course is much more intensive on the classroom time than the old course.

If I may make a suggestion, one of the best aspects of NASK is simply immersing yourself in an Esperanto atmosphere. If you were to attend the 2011 US Landa Kongreso (also in California, June 17-20) and then find something else to do for the week that passes between the LK and NASK, you could wind up with three weeks of Esperanto activities. If you aren't too put off by the current security situation in Mexico, you could find out whether you could spend the week with an Esperanto speaker in Tijuana (I believe Mar Cardenas might live there, or at the very least she has a house there, and may be able to hook you up with someone else; her e-mail address is amikema [at] aol.com) At any rate you could contact some Mexican Esperanto speakers and see what you can arrange for yourself. San Diego is right at the border.

A big part of the old 3-week NASK was attending cultural events and excursions as part of an Esperanto-speaking group. I believe that much of that has been cut from the new, abbreviated NASK. But the idea of going on excursions with Esperanto speakers is something you can easily replicate for yourself, both by attending a Landa Kongreso (which usually includes Esperanto-language excursions to local sightseeing attractions) and by staying somewhere with a local Esperanto speaker who can show you around.

Doing tourism with an Esperanto speaker, even in an English speaking country, you can basically go through the entire day speaking no English at all, except to order food at a restaurant. I have done it many times. It's great practice.

@ orthohawk: thanks for that. I'll see how it fits in with the UK.

@ Erinja: I didn't know there was a "current situation in Mexico." This is not filling me with confidence! rideto.gif

Juarez I believe is the centre of the problem at the moment, from reading the paper at least. The normal drug war stuff.

The course itself is June 12-17 (in Heinavesi) with an "antauxkurso" starting on the 10th in Tampere.
