For those of you who followed an earlier discussion on Slovak Online, the new E@I-affiliated website for learning Slovak, I have a brief update. The site is currently scheduled to go live at the end of March or the beginning of April. It is likely that the site's developers will be looking for users to test the site and provide feedback in the month of April. If anyone is interested in signing up as a test user when the time comes, please let me know (feel free to send me a private message containing your e-mail address) and I'll pass your names along to the developers.

I'm interested. But why are you making this announcement only in the English language forum? Is the site only for English speakers?

I'm announcing in the English forum because there was a previous discussion about the site in this forum.

Jevgenij will be making an announcement to the Esperanto forums shortly.

...however the other issue is that an Esperanto version doesn't yet exist and isn't even officially under development (though the test version of the site does have an incomplete Esperanto translation). They have EU funding to do versions in English, Slovak, Russian, Polish, and German. The Esperanto translation will be done by volunteers. Once the Esperanto translation is complete, volunteers can use the Esperanto version (and the other versions as well) to translate the site into many more languages, like lernu.

Another update, Slovak Online has now gone live.

The contents of the site aren't anywhere near complete, and the translations of the site aren't yet complete either, but you can get a sense of the site's general contents and functionality.

Looks nice, the design feels like a nice blend between the interfaces of many social network style websites and wikis, thus the site feels like a true example of 2011 website design! - off topic but I must ask, on the front page, the blondulino and friends picture, is that stock image photography or taken specifically for the website? I swear that I've seen that face before somewhere (or maybe Europe has lots of very similar looking blonde people with big smiles? lango.gif).

Are we allowed to create accounts? Because I am already, but I'll abandon it if that's not meant to be happening (although I assume they'd lock things up if you weren't meant to use it okulumo.gif)

The intro text (where I've read up to so far) is in EO too. The EO version may in some ways be better than the English one.

Yeah, on the translations, ... it's a work in progress. They have non-native speakers doing the English translation, and since they have funding for that work, they don't want to go to volunteer (native speaker) translators. The funding supposedly also includes some editing work but that may not have been done yet. I expect that once the funding runs out, native English speakers will go through and clean up whatever mistakes remain in the English version.

The site is still officially beta and the official full launch isn't until (I believe) October or November, so I'm trying not to get too 'judgy' on the English translation.

You should expect the Esperanto text to be perfect, or nearly, since it's an easier language to become fluent in than English. I'm registered as a translator for Esperanto but my work is only a small percentage of the whole.

That sounds a bit silly. Why not just get native speakers to do the job straight off? It would be a lot faster that way, and to a much higher standard.

Yeah, great. What fun wading through the dodgy English correcting it. Even on the opening page you can see the mistakes.

Surely the funding would be much more wisely spent if they got a native English-speaker to do this? Why rely on volunteers to tidy up the mess? (If they can be bothered).

What happened to the "profesionalism" of the team behind the site?

Bottom line, it's a course to teach Slovak, so most of the team is Slovak, with the exception of those who are doing the site's programming. There are no native English speakers on the team.

Since the site yasn't yet been officially launche and is still in ::::Beta:::: version, and the English translation is not yet even complete (it currently stands at 82%), I think it's too early to be critical.

I am told that after the translation is complete, it will be proofread. I am assuming that they prefer to bring in a native English speaker to do the proofreading all at one go, rather than doing it piecemeal before the translation is complete. Presumably (hopefully) the proofreading will be done by a native English speaker, but I didn't ask, and the person I talked to may not know the answer anyway, not being one of the English translators.
